WMS BB3 Blade start issue
« on: August 04, 2024, 03:50:33 am »
I have a starting problem with my WMS BB3, it starts for about 5-10 seconds after which the power supply switches off. It started by doing a permanent reboot. I can exclude the CPU because I had connected another one for testing, with the same behavior. How can I be sure that the problem is the power supply and not one of the other components?

If you have a thermal camera, you can see if something on the backplane is heating up to cause the short.  If you don't see anything heating up, then it is most likely your power supply.

Thank you very much for your help and time. I have now looked at the temperatures with a borrowed thermal camera while switching on. Doesn't look like a problem with the circuit board to me. It behaves in such a way that it runs for about 5-10 seconds when first switched on and then switches off. After that I can't switch it on again until I have disconnected it from the power supply for a while. As a test, I unplugged all the cables leading away from the power supply and it still doesn't switch on. Do you think it could be the power supply? Or can I test something else to be sure? Is the power supply unit in the BB2 identical? Otherwise I could remove it for testing.

bb2 power is the same as blade.

Might check if the entire CPU is shutting off or just the video.

Very well known recall for overcurrent on certain video cards in NXT3.2 CPU's  Worth checking to see if your video card is one that was recalled.

Bulletin attached to check.

Thank you all for the help and advice. I am looking for a WMS power supply UNI-750 for my WMS BB3, does anyone have a good address where I can buy one?

Offhand, Nomad Gaming is selling them on eBay.
I would ask them to test it with a machine that has printer first.
If the printer doesn't have a [Printer COM error] during the test, get it... price is good.

It was the power supply unit, I replaced it and now everything is running again.

Unfortunately the problem is back what I originally had, it keeps restarting after a long time, permanent reboot.  I can pretty much rule out the CPU as I had two different ones in there. Can something on the backboard be responsible, or maybe a plugged in device (like ticket printer)?

What can easily cause a lot of problems is an old clogged ventilation fan.
With the power OFF, check every one of them with your fingers for easy free spinning.
You WILL feel if any one of the blades are giving you any resistance.
Any fan that feels like that should be replaced immediately.

Why?
A stuck, resistant fan motor are power supply killers.
They're drawing too much amps from the power supply to try to keep the motor turning and over-working the power supply.
When the power supply is over-worked, wonky things start happening to the rest of the machine.
Something to check anyways.

The power supply you bought may have been tested as working at wherever you bought it from, but it was highly probable that it's just as old as the one you had - ready to give out.
I bought some "refurbished" PSU a while back for a machine.
When I got it in, I almost died when I saw the power supply's' own fan! It was clogged with .... well it looked like a dead rat in it! lol

Thanks for your help. I do not assume that the power supply unit is the problem because it shows the same behavior as the previous one, only that this one did nothing at all after some time. The power supply I bought (from nomad_gaming) looks very new.

When I was checking the cables, I found a cable bundle which was not insulated or protected, after I protected it with insulating tape, the problem no longer existed. It is possible that this came into contact with the housing from time to time and that is why it kept restarting. The main thing is that it no longer reboots. thank you all for the helpful tips!

The issue is back, now it’s same location when it’s start.
