Hard drive repair-bucks ahoy reel touch
« on: August 18, 2024, 06:50:32 pm »
Hi,

I have just bitten my first reel touch machine and the previous owner said the hard drive cable had burnt up when plugged in wrong and would need to be repaired. I started up the machine and it seems that was indeed the issue. I rewired the cable and plugged it in and the bios started and recognized the hard drive and starts to boot. Half the time it will get past the bios and just load into a back screen and the other half of the time it will load into the one moment please screen and freeze. The slot display just says waiting on video display.I may need to replace the cable and the hard drive it self. Any helpful info or links to these would be greatly appreciated. I have attached images as well.

Thanks,

A couple of questions:
How long are you waiting for the top box to boot?
It takes 7-10 minutes for some reel touch to fully boot.
I believe your repair of the cable is working, that is a good thing because they are very hard to find. A few more pictures of the harness would be good.
I would suspect the harddrive is having issues.
I can probably get you going but I need to know a little more about the machine. From your provided pictures I can tell that your top box is a bios 2. I will also need to know the SB, SG, and VS chip numbers from the lower MPU. Also is it a 500 series or enhanced 1270 MPU.

Hi,

Thanks for your help!

Quick question about the top box boot? Am I suppose to see the reel touch please wait screen and wait 7-10 minutes or just a black screen. It was going to the please wait screen and now it isnt, its just going black. What made you think the repair of the cable was working? The board is just a 500 series. For the sb,sg, and vs chip#'s could i swap the board into a s2000 and get them? I cant check those on this machine as its just stuck on the waiting for video display message.

Thanks,

7 -10 minutes total time.
As the harddrive is booting it is normal to go black for a while along with two or three different blue screens.
As far as the chip numbers they should be on the chips themselves.

It has the version chip number but the other ones have been written over. I do have a chip reader could I pull the sb and sg numbers from reading them?

Thanks,

What is the max credit of the machine?  45cr??
You can read them but it's not spelled out directly.
You could also email me the bin files and I would be able tell you.

Here’s the pictures of the chips when I read them.
Sb is the first one then game1 chip then game2 chip. It’s 2 cent denom 9 line and you can play 5 lines.

SB000566, SG000536, VS011GX1
From the information you gave me.
I can make a HD for that combination.
Other issues that can stop the top box boot process:
What do the capacitors on the top box motherboard look like? Are they bulged on the tops of them?

Sounds good let me know what you need from me to get this hard drive. I’m pretty confident it’s the issue since the cable to it was fried as well. The capacitors look fine.

Another question:
Is the fan running and the heatsink free of dust located in the top box covering the cpu chip?

Hi,

Replacing the hard drive did not result in a fix. My suspicion is that the harness is not repaired. Do you know of a diagram that shows where each wire should trace to?  The memory goes to 523k, goes through the bios, does two tests that say success then it goes to black screen. Is there a way for me to verify the hard drive harness is working? The guy we got this machine from said it was working then someone didn’t plug in the hard drive right and fired the cable and only the cable would need to be replaced, however we thought we rewired it correct. I attached more photos as well. Sometimes when booting it doesn’t start up at all but when we try again it starts up. It happens at random it seems.

Thanks,

Are the tops of the caps swelled? The ones by the fan look swelled, hard to tell from the picture.

Here is some more pictures I only noticed one has some brown on the top. To me the others look fine but maybe I’m not looking for the right thing. I’m going to look for a harness and try it and see if it fixes the issue.

Thanks,

I see 4 or five bulged. They must be flat on the tops, not raised up at all.

Be careful they are two sided boards with very thin traces.  Member lookes does really good work if you determine it's too hard.

Usually when the harness burns just the wire you replaced with the red wire burns (actually glows red and melts within seconds) as long as it didn't burn the other wires on the harness you should be OK. That is the power wire for the harddrive so we know it's getting power.
Question I have is if the machine was working as the seller told you, why would he have unplugged the harddrive unless the machine had already stopped working?
Caps and or mpu chip would be my best guess.

Im not sure, the hard drive was still there just the harness was unplugged. I'm guessing after it burnt up he removed the cable completely.

Thanks,
