Help with a Universal Slot, please....
« on: October 10, 2024, 01:45:21 pm »
 :Scratch-Head:

Hello all, I have a Universal slot machine that is running a 8116-a2 game board. I believe the game number to be 8630-3L. When I first got it, it had a dead battery, i replaced the battery, there was not excessive corrosion or signs of leaking. I reinstalled the board, did the ram reset and at this point all it will do is release the handle, and displays 0 in the win meter.

My 9.5VAC to pin 5 & E is low at 4.87 volts. That being said i do have 4.26 VDC at pin 26 of the Z80 CPU. I feel like the cpu is stuck in reset, but I do not know enough the Z80 to be sure.I also have verified that I do have a stable clock pulse to the cpu, but I do not see any data moving on the data lines.

Also a little help with figuring out what power supply is in this thing would be great. I've been all over the forums looking but mine seems different than all I see. The filter inside the power supply has been bypassed. also all sockected chips have been removed and reseated. The EEPROMs do contain data, but I have know way of knowing if the data is valid.

I also have checked that all door switches, coin sensors, ect. are working correctly.

another question, upon start up should the reels spin and reset, like an IGT 2000 does?

Something else I just thought of, I never get the insert coin lamp to light. The lamp was verified as being good. And the MAX bet lamp is always on. :Scratch-Head:

Also it will not go into the port test mode. :banghead:

Hello Tvguy15425

So you have a Universal 8116 machine with a 8630-3L-0615 game chip (87.587% payback).

And we're going to need some clarification and a little more info.

-When you booted up and performed an all clear you pressed the all clear switch on the main CPU board and held it down while powering up? The full clear switch is located bottom-center of the CPU board. The coin hopper needs to be pulled out to give a better access to the button through the CPU covers access hole.
-While changing the battery the area around the battery was inspected thoroughly for any trace with acid damage?
-We'll need a photo posted of the entire CPU board and a close-up of the battery area (sub board removed).
-Verify the program number on the Master System Eprom chip, should be 8601.

After a all clear reset has been completed the WIN METER will display a two digit error code on the left side and a zero on the right side. The CREDIT METER, LAST GAME and COINS PLAYED will all display a zero. None of the door push buttons will be lit.

With the information previously given the displays are incorrect and a push button is lit up. So there's a possibility that the all clear didn't take or there's a bad trace(s) on the main CPU board or the System Eprom chip is corrupt.

Sorry for the delay, its been a busy few days. Yes when rebooting I held the black button on the mpu, while powering on. I got one "beep" from the speaker but nothing else seems to function as intended. I'm hoping to have free day in the next day or two, I will power up the board on my test bench, with variable power supplies, and test all of the communications between the z80, and the rom and ram chips. And will post pictures of the board. I have tested all of the traces with a meter and found nothing broken. I stuck at the thinking that the Z80 is not resetting/rebooting correctly, but I maybe wrong. Once I get it on the bench, I should be able to tell if there is an action on the Z80 data lines. My first thought was to test it via a logging digital scope, but I may just start with a logic probe.

Pics of the board that was requested:

So the progress I've made today, on my bench, the MU seems to be working correctly. I applied 5VDC and 9.6VAC, all the the data lines seemed to be talking with EPROMS, CPU, and RAM. Once the MPU was reinstalled pin 5 and E on the board was only seeing 5.6VAC, and the CPU reset was always low, with nothing on any of the data lines.

A question I have is where does the the "Neural" side of the 9.5VAC connect? I can not locate it on any of the diagrams I have. Is it connect to the ground terminals inside of the power supply? I feel like the 9.5V from the transformer is good as all of my DC voltages are stable and correct.

At one point I did have 9.1VAC and did get a 12 error code, which could not be right, the battery is installed correctly, with a standby voltage of 3.6V. :banghead:

Is anyone able to identify my power supply from the pictures? it has a three pin connector that supplies line voltage, a nine pin that seems to supply the handle and tower light????, and a fifteen pin that supplies the rest of the machine. Is this a narrow machine power supply? How can you tell a narrow machine? Mine measures 18 1/2 inches.

Hello Tvguy15425

So the 5.6vac measured at the 15 pin Molex plug on the power supply or the CPU board is normal, it's feed back to the CPU that the power supply is functioning. Voltage too low results in a Error code 11.

The neutral side of the 9.5vac can only be effectively be measured off of the power supply transformer taps or the inputs to the 5vdc or 12vdc bridge rectifiers, inside the power supply.

The Error code 12 can mean a couple of things; one the battery voltage is low or two there's a defective chip on the board. If all the data lines checked ok between the Z80 and the Eproms/Ram, no opens or shorts and the battery voltage to the RAM chip is detected when powered down then I would suspect the Master chip in board position 4A is corrupt, that's the 8601 Eprom.

You have a narrow body machine, the wide body is 21.25" across the frontside. Explains the different type of power supply, but the internals match a wide body RED DOT supply. The supply has three Molex plugs; 3 wire for the 115vac in, 9 wire out to the tower lamps and pull handle solenoid, and 15 wire for the ac/dc outputs.

Here's the typical wire color code which can be measured at the 15 pin Molex:
a) +5VDC PINK
b) +24VDC ORANGE
c) +12VDC RED
d) GROUND BLACK
e) +32VDC VIOLET
f) 100VAC GREY

With the battery your using, it should be a rechargeable 3.6V Nimh. The board has a trickle charge circuit which may in time short the Lithium. Okay to use for troubleshooting but I'd change it or disable the charge circuit once the issues are resolved.

So after checking over the board and there's no obvious reasons for the game not loading up (open traces, shorts or incorrect voltages) then we should try a fresh 8601 Master chip. Do you have a chip burner? I currently do not have the 8601 chip program but I do have a test program that should verify that the critical chips are functional.

So I did open the power supply again and I have 9.97VAC from the transformer. I guess I was stuck in thinking there had to be neutral/return to the board also, as the manual states you need 9.5VAC at pins 5 & E.

I do have a mini pro chip programmer that I have used to do a lot of 8 liner eeporoms in the past.

I do have a list of the checksums from the eproms if that would help.

eprom 2A 0x000C 9A96
eprom 4A 0x0006 5F67
eprom sound 0x0007 D8BF

When I was able to see and verify all of that datas working, it was on the bench, with 5VDC applied to pins 1 and 3, and 9.6VAC to pins 1 and 5. I have only seen what seemed like any life at all, with the board in the machine, the one time that it popped the error code 12 in the  win meter, but that only stayed for aybe 2 seconds. With the board in the machine there is no data moving.

I should also mention that cap c10 was bad, and was pulling the Z80 reset low every few seconds, I replaced that yesterday. It was 47uF 50V, that once removed was only testing at 2-3 uF.

I'm adding a picture of all of the voltages that I tested on the power supply. These voltages are with everything connected, and the machine on.

Good find on the C10.

Unfortunately the checksums are not listed in the chip file spreadsheet for the 8630 or 8601 chips. I do have the checksum for the 0822 sound file and it is correct. I'll do some digging and see what i can find.

Your more than welcome to try the Master file I have. It's not a match for the 8630 but it may help restoring the diagnostics. PM me your email and I send it out. Burn it on a 2732 with a speed better than the original 350ns.

PM sent.

I will try anything at this point. After looking over the low voltage diagram on page 6 10, I'm starting to question if I also have an issue with Q2. My output is 4.87V from 8D into the inverter 4F, out of 4F I have 0.01V, it seems like this should bias Q2, and thus provide my 5V out of 3G to the Z80 pin 26 reset.

My thinking is the Z80 is never completing a reset cycle, thus nothing is working including the diagnostics. all that being said i may be just over thinking it. It has been many years since I have done this deep of an component level troubleshooting. I work with electronics everyday, but my job has become troubleshoot replace, throw away, and repeat. But that is not an option on this, as, from what I've seen, there just are no parts to be had.

Pitts256, thank you for the file. That took way longer than it needed too. I had to scan every spare eprom I had to find a blank one, due to the fact my eraser's light bulb decided to burn out today. Something else to fix I guess.

But I did get one burned, and the results are the same. no life other than normal lighting, the $.25 light, last game coins played light, and the coins played light. other than that no life, nothing moving on the data lines either.   :banghead:

On a side note, once i get back to my bench, i will post some pictures of why the noise filters need to go. It was one of the first things I did, and I finally opened it today. All I can is wow. I don't know if the salt air caused all the damage or something else, but it is crazy. This machine originally came from the Sands casino in Atlantic city. my cousin got it from a co-worker when it quit working, and I've got it from her.

I have this board available, was told when I purchased it that it was a working board? I have nothing to test it in, nor do I see any of these machines come in for service, I have a complete working hopper as well.

asking 100.00  shipped for the board

Thanks for the offer, Jim,
I maybe more inclined to purchase, if I can verify that my ROMs are correct and good.

Well some Progress today, Q2 was in fact bad, one side measured as a diode, the other side was shorted, after replacing that I do have data moving on all of the data lines to the Z80. With the MPU installed in the machine. Although the machine still does not work.  :Scratch-Head: As a matter of fact the only change was it now high a high pitch "Hum" from the speaker. So i am suspecting the eprom data maybe corrupt? But I'm really not sure at this point. The system file that Pitts256 sent me, does the same thing.

As I mentioned yesterday, here are a few pictures of the noise filter that I had removed from the power supply first.

Q2 and C10 are part of the low voltage error timing circuit. It shouldn't prevent the Z80 from loading the Master program but it will stop the game from running. You might have a look at the chip sockets too, I repaired one board that wouldn't load up due to a corroded weak pin.

Still looking for the chip information.

So we were able to find a couple of Eprom programs that should work on your machine.

Game: 8630-3LR-0614 (90.517%)
Master: 8601-3L-208.

Check your email.

Sorry for the long delay. I got new EPROMs programmed with the files mentioned above, unfortunately, I have the same results. So at this point, I am ordering a logic analyzer and I’m going to attempt to watch what ZD is doing at all times and move forward from that point. I will give everyone an update once I receive that and get some data.
