Bally 1088-34 $1 coin restoration help

I picked up this machine yesterday. Needs the usual cleaning and adjusting.  Someone has converted it to quarters, but that does not match the top glass.  I’d like to make it work with Ike dollars again.

Looks like they kept most of the Ike dollar hardware.  The coin head, slide, and hopper parts are there.

There are parts for the Ike dollar coin mech, but I’ve never seen one, and not sure what is missing, or how these parts re-assemble.

your first pic in post #2 is the correct mech frame for a game with a scavenger assembly instead of a coin lockout coil.  afaik, all the $1 machines used a scavenger assembly.

actually, the 5000 manual kinda sucks for this, so look at pages 83-84 of the 2400 manual which details the scavenger coil and mounting bracket correctly.  The bracket (coil stop) is bally part number A-613-82 ... doesn't look like you can get it from the pinball parts suppliers tho.

Great, thanks for the photo.  Will check out the manual.

I’m not too concerned with coin rejection,   but it appears that finding the correct coin mech is going to be nearly impossible.

May have to get creative with that part.

However,  keeping this as a quarter machine is silly.  Wish the previous owner had kept all the parts when they converted it.

I found a $1 coin mech that works.  I swapped the coin head, chute, and changed the hopper back to $1.

Machine is paying correctly on wins,  but also pays $1 on every losing spin.

Seems like the hopper briefly powers on after the reels all index.

It doesn’t seem long enough to be a mixing event,  but reminds me of that.


Because the coin counter unit is separate, I can have it outside of the machine while playing to inspect.

Anything I should look for to remedy this issue?

Check reel lever #1. Make sure it moves smoothly through its full range of motion. Make sure there are no wires coming into contact with it. If it hangs up just a bit, it’s possible to stop momentarily on the cherry contacts before completely resting into the index wheel and giving a quick but short pay.

I did a lot of cleaning.  Reel mech, coin counter, stepper unit.

The issue is that the coin counter is not immediately resetting after a win.

It resets kind of slowly.  After it does, it no longer pays the $1 on non-wins.

Also, it is paying $3 for cherries intermittently.

Coin counter manually resets well, snaps back quickly.

How do I improve this sluggish reset?

The payout counter only resets upon a win. For the strongest tension on the payout wipers, adjust the round spring on the back of the 100 tooth gear until the unit can step up 200 clicks fairly easily without binding. This is usually about 2 wraps or a little less. Now watch the “2” trace at the bottom of the payout counter board. The wipers should disconnect (fall off) that trace on the 2nd click. The tolerance is tight and may not be easily seen. If it continues to pay over 1 coin, the zero stop bumper might need a little adjustment. Look for the black pencil eraser size bumper and turn it 1/2-1 turn so that when reset, the wipers start a little farther along the trace.

Another cause of small overpays is related to timing. On the left side of the reel mech is the variator which has a stack of switches hanging over it. As the variator moves, switches are opened and closed. If the switches are not aligned properly, they can cause the hopper to run a moment longer than needed, causing an overpay.

I did not have much luck adjusting the zero stop.  Did not see any switches out of alignment on the side of the reel mech.

The machine is still intermittently paying an extra $1.  It is also still paying $1 on non wins,  but only immediately after a win.  The second spin after the errant $1 will not pay & works normally.

The machine is not paying out properly. Neither of those plays were wins. That machine pays L-R and R-L. Have you manually set up the other pays to see what it does? I would first verify the reels are in the correct order and that the tapes are in their proper position on the reels. Then check the reel lever wipers to insure they are on the correct buttons on the wiper board when seated in each slot of the index wheel.

I think the angle of that video was deceiving.  The strips line up with Payline  fairly well.

You can see on this one-  10 coin win, followed by a loss. The loss has the $1 error.

It was the zero stop after all.

I had extended it to the point of falling off with no improvement.

Looking at it again today,  it was missing the rubber bumper.

I put a temporary one in.  Paying and playing correctly.

Just need to address intermittent bell issue now.

Zero stop is all set now.  All lights functioning.

Bell issue is related to this relay.  I replaced it, but the original did not have any markings left on it.

Bell is working now, but want to make sure it’s going to stay that way.

What is the correct relay for this hopper part?

Turns out the switch for the bell on the payout relay was out of adjustment.

Machine is fully operational.
