I believe my WMS 40X needs a new lower power supply, based on other posts I have read. I have a computer ATX but it does not have a power switch on it does it need one added?

You do not need a power switch. Read about 1/3 of the way into this post for the reference to the green wire to tell the power supply to turn on without software control:

I noticed that it’s recommended to test the power supply by removing the I/O board and PCBA board. He specifies installing a defective I/O board to do the testing. This is my first WMS 40X and I don’t have a defective I/0 to test with. Is there any other way to preform the test?

Well I did the lower power conversion and have the proper voltage readings. All 5 Led lights are on the I/O board and the credit displays nothing at all. Is it possible that I require a new I/O board? If so does anyone know where I could buy one?

I mean I have one, but I stock up on any WMS stuff I can find since it's so rare, I'd hate to lose it. Your board may be fine. If you're getting nothing, that's better than a Fail light or some lights. It sounds like it's not receiving anything. I'd check your connections again with the new power supply before going further. I know it's hard, but check the voltages going right to the I/O board and see if they're making it that far.

Finally got back to looking at this machine. Appears all voltages are correct but I don’t get any activity on the door display. I am not familiar with this machine. I have a fresh battery in the I/O board but I’m not getting any voltage readings on any of the EPROMs. Should one of the EPROMs have 3.6v? Similar to an IGT S2000 eprom voltage check?

Still unable to get anything displayed in the meter or credits. Not sure if this matters but I did neglect to say that somewhere along the line someone replaced the upper Dotmation power supply with an ATX. I did notice that on the backplane there is a connection that says misc & lights. That harness goes to the top box and is a 20 pin connector but it’s not plugged into anything.

The way it stands now the upper Dotmation powers up, bill validator engages and cycles, coin acceptor lights up and all lights work.

I don’t get the bong sound and nothing displays in the meters or credits

Probably the separate 5 volt supply on the power distribution board that is lost.

I’m not sure where to find the power distribution board. Is there a way to determine the voltage there?

The lower original power supply box mounted in the lower left side where the hopper is , has all the harnesses plugged into it, inside that box and the board which has all the Molex connectors on it, that is the distribution board. It has a 5 (?) volt circuit on it. There is 2 soldered in type fuses on that board. One may be bad? As far as testing it, hopefully someone with more knowledge about these 5 (?) volt circuit on this board will chime in please.

Before I installed the lower ATX modification the machine would make the bong sound and displayed 1/2 zeros in the credit and win meter display. The upper Dotmation was not plugged into upper power supply.

Question is can I remove the lower ATX power supply I installed, reconnect the original power supply and try it. I altered the original wire harness for the ATX power supply. Or would that approach do damage?

I will first reverify the voltage as per your instructions. Is there any information on the power supply that connects to the back plane?

Well I retested voltage and I have a couple issues. The orange with red stripe wire is 3.37v (not 5v) and the one grey wire is not reading in the 18-20v. I will have to try to locate issue.

And i may be wrong about the voltage that i mentioned earlier. It maybe the 20V that's the issue.
