PE Bad Memory

Just got this machine.  Board looks new,  had dead battery.

Replaced battery.

Now getting bad memory tilt.

Tried holding self test 5 seconds and closing door.

Door Cherry switch is functional.

Pe or pe+?
I had to run a set chip on my plus after changing battery. Not always required but sometimes.

PE non plus doesn’t usually need anything.

If its a non plus re-seat any IC in a socket. Post a picture of the board from the top.

I believe it is a PE.  I pulled the board  again and noticed the left side has an oxidized pin.  The retaining clip on the left side is broken as well.  Thinking someone yanked it out by the wires at some point.

By moving the left side  harness around,  I was able to clear the error.  Played a hand or two, but connection is not solid.

How do I determine which wires are suspect?  None were clearly loose at the connection end.

Spray deoxit on all the pins. Put the connector in and out several times to wipe the oxidation away.
Gotta make sure it isn’t that first.
Looking at your pictures again that is definitely a PE.

I cleaned the connections.  Seems fairly stable now.  Game takes quarters and all hold buttons work.

Bet one and cashout buttons are not working.

They don’t appear in test mode.  I tried jumping, no change.

Are these buttons all related?

I recently uploaded a full schematic for PE non-plus, complements of Jim at Midwest Slots. It covers buttons too.
On a PE it appears they both use the same Vb+, however the hold buttons go to U2 while the cashout and bet1 go to U3.  Certainly worth exploring. If they are the same IC you could swap them and see if the problem follows the IC. Unfortunately they are not in sockets so you might want to try testing/comparing in circuit. I am not convinced you have identified all pin oxidation issues if you got improvement on some after cleaning.

Made some progress while the turkey was smoking.


I think there is a combination of misplaced button connections and some oxidized terminals.

I have all the buttons except for cash out, bet one and service working now.  When in test mode,  I’ve seen all of the buttons  appear, so I’m thinking it’s just needing more cleaning and correction.

Thanks for the link to the wiring diagram.  I understand the color number scheme,  but can’t decipher what number wires go to those buttons on the diagram.

Look at the J1 PIN number on the schematic and look at the wire in that goes to that pin. That wire goes all the way to the button. 

There are two rows of pins on that connector and pin 1 is labeled on the housing or on the circuit board. There might be a color code chart but there aren’t that many wires. Plus you are only looking for 2 or 3 wires, right?

Are you saying the buttons do not respond in test mode?

Most of the buttons respond in test mode.

Each button has 3 unique color strands that go to the board.

I tested the three problem buttons wiring at entry to board & wiring is ok.

By jumping the three buttons common to various places, I can get bet one to work consistently, but cashout does not remain stable in any jumping configuration.

Thinking this black spot on the board may be the issue?

OK, will do.  What is a good replacement for Q4.

It is printed on the flat side of the transistor.

The other transistors in that row are legible, but Q4 is split.

Hard to make out the letters.

I bet they all have the same part number.

Before I learned to have a little patience I would be screaming Look at the schematic!
However, I was surprised they don’t call out the value of Q2-Q5.
I then looked at my PE board and while they are indeed all the same they are not the same number shown in Johns.
In tne end I found a list of components in the manual, they are triacs all 4 have the same value so you can order based on one of the others.
I have attached a screenshot that shows what button each controls.
