No need to clear a S+ unless you are in the "61 loop".

I am preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. This machine has sat with a dead battery for a decade. Any chance it’ll wake right up without the 61 loop?

Yes but you will get a few errors you will need to clear by opening the door and turning the J/P reset key.

What SP chip do you have?

ok so , new battery in, and got the 61 cleared and then got a 65-3 so i held test button closed door and used reset key 1 time and then it goes to 65-1.
as for the SP chip it is SP1271

i did and it does not change it stays on 65-3

Depress and hold the test button in for 3 seconds until the numbers change.
Tell us what you get next, then we'll tell you what to do next.
Just pressing the test button momentarily and then closing the door doesn't get OUT of the code.

Ok it is displaying 65-3 and holding the button does nothing.

It doesn't go to [65-1] or [65-2] when you hold the test button in for 3 seconds?

No. But If I turn the jackpot key it goes to 65-1 but using the reset process for it per manual kicks the 65-3 again

I found an old thread from @straycat that had this same machine and same 65-3 65-1 loop error and he ended up replacing the board. I hope it doesn’t come to that

i did and it does not change it stays on 65-3

65_3 Game options & meters not in most current format Recover options & meters by using correct set chip.
OR Turn jackpot reset key to continue power-up procedure.  Game will be upgraded to most current format.  See 65_1 or 65_2.

Usually there's something we call the dreaded "[61-1] Loop".
I would say that any "loop" usually means a stuck logic signal.
The interesting thing is your machine is stuck in a [65] Loop.
"65" is a code for the small EEprom chip located on the floor-located motherboard the MPU plugs down into.
The "EE" in front of the word prom means "Electronically Erasable".
It works in conjunction with the MPU's CMOS chip in storing and restoring settings and various internal accounting numbers.
The EEprom chip is updated every 100 spins with data.... that's why there's a slight pause every 100 spins.
That chip can sometimes go bad - I've had to replace them a few times on different S+'s.
In my cases, I've snipped off the chip, soldered in a socket holder, pushed in a new chip and got the machine up and running again.

Try to clear the machine with a Clear chip to try get out of the loop.
Hopefully when you re-install back in the SP chip, the [65-1] clears when you hold in the self-test button for a few seconds.

If it doesn't work clearing the machine, then your motherboard or MPU may need to be taken care of.
You can rule out the MPU being the source of the problem if it works in another known good cabinet.
If you have a spare MPU, swap the chips over to it and plug it into this cabinet's motherboard.
If the known good MPU cannot clear the [65], then the problem is with the motherboard.

Are the circuit traces on the motherboard board corroded from rusting?
Too often, slant machines are stored too long in damp environments, because they're so heavy to try to move around.

No moisture or rust anywhere. It had been sitting about 10 years, but it was in a dry heated garage.  The board was very clean no visible damage to any traces. The battery had not leaked. Unfortunately, I have no other S plus machines

okay...I just re-read above, and you've already used a Clear chip.
Do you have another motherboard to try in this?
If not, get a hold of Jim at Midwest Slots.
He may have some boards.
His number's up on the NLG homepage in the vendor area.
Tell him what's happening with your machine.

The other thing...although you're not getting a Low Battery Code 12, what is the status of the MPU battery?
It's been trying to hold onto settings and accounting data for ten years.
Does it have a 1/2AA battery onboard, or something else?

No, I have not yet used a clear or set chip.  I ordered them last week from jjslots but they got stuck in the mail and should be here today. No I do not have any other boards to try

Well I just ordered a known good board from eBay.  I will try the clear procedure this evening when I get off work.  If that doesn’t take I’ll wait for the new board to come and try that.  I was able to locate the sp1271 PSR that nobody wanted to share lol.  But in there it says I need the correct set chip and it names about five different set chips. And that I need the psr for that set chip. Is there a reference for that ?

PSR for SP1271 should be in file section.  SET15 works with SP1271. No need to go to ebay there is a classified section right here.
