IGT GK monitor issues
« on: January 03, 2025, 09:03:41 am »
I have a GK IGame with a Tovis monitor that just started pixelating/glitching only half the screen. I'm thinking it's the Tovis Champion2 Jr (V1.3) board.

Does anyone know if this is what causing the issue?

I have been looking around but not much luck locating this board.

Please HELP!!!!

Power supply or game board/source problem?
Can you connect a PC monitor?

Yes, I did connect an old VGA monitor to it and the picture was perfect, not glitchy pixelation.  I also connected a laptop to the Tovis monitor and it gave the same issue.

Im no expert on LCD monitors but any time you see capacitors on electronic devices or their power supply they are suspect and must be tested whether they are the core cause or not. They must be eliminated as a cause.
Testing them in circuit requires a meter designed for in-circuit testing though. You can always discharge them and do a simple test to see if they are shorted or look for any visual bulging.

Hopefully someone else who knows more about the components will jump in.

Actually, you can use any power supply that puts out the correct power rating. If I recall the video board has spots for 5v or 12v. Any PC or bench top PS will drive that video board. I do know that because someone gave me one of those LCD monbut the PS was missing. I just powered it with a benchtop.

I got this meter from Amaze-on back when I was having a major problem with a monitor.
It helped me find a couple of leaky caps, and finally found a dead shorted one, (which I didn't need the meter to find), just a good VOM set to Ohms.
but it helped me get my screen up and running.
just my2cents.

I am new to troubleshooting electronic circuit boards, my first option was to just replace the Tovis board or maybe the power supply, I was only able to find them from a UK website but was hoping to find someone here who had a board I could purchase.

Thanks for the advise, I guess my second option could be to repair the board by checking/replacing the capacitors.    :EmoticonHelp4:

Reality is, if you are going to start buying boards and swapping them in you will probably have $100-$150 invested. I don’t know what the size that monitor is but you might be able to get a new one for a little over $200 plus shipping.

Any arcade tech can connect a bench PS to that Tovis board, they would understand the concept of what you are trying to troubleshoot. This same type monitor is used in the new cocktail table snd upright arcade games.

Hundreds of those monitors/games have died or been scrapped, Im really surprised no one has them for sale.

Thats a great find. And as I suspected if you shotgun replace the video board and the PS you will be in well over $100. I would try PS first. Do the video boards ever go bad?

I could be wrong, but I really believe we're looking in there at an LCD flat screen, rather than a tube.
Displaying half a garbled screen like that, leads me towards a faulty AD board, rather than a faulty power supply.
On the other hand, if the 5 volts from the PSU is bad, then the AD drives screwed up video.

We may need another opinion...where's Dr. House !?!?  :24:

its a LCD for sure. Im glad you jumped in. I assumed the voltage was unclean and causing the board to mess up resolution or lose count of lines.
I wonder what component would fail that would cause image distortion on only one side.
If replacing the board fixes it there is no reason to worry about it.

Badconfig, I think the consensus is to buy a replacement AD board. Looks like $55.

Thank you for additional information and help finding the board, I have made a purchase for the AD Board. I will keep you updated on the progress once I get the board in.

Be careful...I notice differences  :sherlock: of the three dip switches in your photo, and the one at Get-T.
The boards are the same, but the dips are configured differently.
I think on yours, dip #1 is ON and the other two are OFF.
In the Get-T photo, all the dips are ON.
Did you change those dips at all?

I'd like to look at the dips of known working LCD AD board, just to be sure.
Let us know what the dips set for when you get the new AD board in, before installing.

No I didn't change any of the dip switches, but I will definitely check that they are set the same before I power it all back on.

Thank you  :cool_thumb_up:

I don't know which way the dips are supposed to be set at really.
I'd have to rip off an LCD back cover from a working AVP LCD to check.
You need someone to verify that before installing.
I'm only assuming that yours is correct because you've never touched them.

It can be hard to spot them, sometimes the caps may look quite normal, and be either leaky or shorted completly.
here are a couple of great examples from another guys website about replacing caps in a tv/monitor  ( credit to the author of this page)    https://www.robotroom.com/Faulty-Capacitors-1.html
A Great Read for info on what to expect.

Another site I haven't been on so long I had to reset the password on (from 2013, STILL GOING!!) :  https://www.badcaps.net/  Some really good reading here also!!
  I hope this helps some.

Hello everyone

I am finally getting back around to testing the bad boards.  I ended up picking up both the AD Board and a Power Supply board.

TEST1: New AD Board with Old PS = Same Issue (bars on left half of screen), with green led
TEST2: New AD Board with New PS = Monitor shows black screen (no picture), with yellow led
TEST3: Old AD Board with New PS = Monitor shows black screen (no picture), with yellow led
TEST4: Tested both Old/New Power Supply output connector (with volt meter) ,it reads => GRD +12V GRD +12V (on both PS units)

So makes me believe the AD board is ok and something weird is going on the the Power Supply boards, both read the same voltages, but gives different results on the screen display.
I did try to find a third PS board, but I have had no luck, seems I grabbed the last one  :Scratch-Head:
Maybe I should consider buying a new monitor, not sure where or which one I need to get?

[20 minutes later...]   :gary:

I left the machine on for a while (15 minutes) and noticed the display fixed itself and seemed to be working, the touch screen was off but worked.  Then about 10 minutes after that the left side bars started to come back.  :Scratch-Head:
I am currently running the machine with the New AD board with the Old Power Supply.

Please let me know if anyone can offer some advice on what I should do next to fix the machine?

Thank You ^-^

If replacing the AD board and PS does not resolve the issue there must be something wrong with the video processor. Did you ever connect a known-working monitor to the machine? Maybe the problem is the game.

Hi Chris,

Yes I did connect a spare VGA monitor and it worked, picture was perfect, so I think the game is good.
