Bally V2000 Smelling Hot?

Finally got into this newly acquired unit & replaced the battery.
Machine powered up, display looked good, and played couple games.

Noticed a strong stale cigarette smell inside the cabinet with unit off. After playing a couple hands the smell outside got real bad. Couldn't tell if something was getting hot or just from the smoke residue.  Turned it off & poked around, no smoke, & didn't see anything obvious.

Aside from a real noisy fan, most seemed to be in order...no fuses blown

Is there any history of anything overheating on these units?

What's the best way to get rid of smoke odors?

Most likely the crt monitor board. Some of the older models use big resistors that can get hot.
No way to know if its normal without more information . I can’t smell it from here. Lol
Turn the machine off and pull the monitor out, post some pictures.
Most likely a RGB1401 or a WG 13”.
Possibly a Ceronix 1492.

There's a big difference between a smoke odor and heat. Yes you can smell when something overheats but, in many cases you can feel around too. I'd run it awhile, then power off/pull the plug and feel around.
Of course, avoid the CRT! 
I found a problem with "heat" in reverse once with an obscure machine I had no schematics for. All the heat sinks on the voltage regulators were (the normal) hot, except one. I replaced that one and the machine fired up and worked.

Here's some photos of the monitor.  It looks to me like it's been replaced recently.
Exceptionally clean & almost new looking.

Haven't been able to remove the top glass yet, wood appears to be swollen and can't lift bracket over the top of it. Don't notice the odor in the bottom of cabinet near as bad as what blows out the two side vents on top.  Can't identify the smell, has a little bit of burnt (concerning part) with a whole lot of stink.

I'll unplug the fan & run it for a little bit & then poke around.  It's bout 40 in the garage right now.  Typing this out it occurs to me I need to open the top & see inside.

I had a real STINKY IGT Fortune one and it did smell more, the longer I had it on. Its former owner was an old woman that smoked constantly while playing. When I pulled the CRT, the entire inside was brown with sticky oily tobacco. And when it gets warm, those oils emanated more odor! ICK! I spent about an hour cleaning the cabinet and then carefully wiping down the other components that had residual on the. Finally the smell went away.

Found this tag loose in the bottom. Don't know if it's from the original monitor or the existing one.

What do you recommend for cleaning old smoke residue; good old Dawn dishsoap, vinegar & warm water?

Able to wrestle the top open with three putty knives.  Nothing notable (somewhat disappointing); unplugged the fan.
Taped the door switch closed and turned it on.

Got a series of six beeps, door's mechanical coin mechanism cycled, got 5 more beeps, saw some text on the screen.
Strong burnt smell so I unplugged immediately.

Was on maybe 20 -30 seconds.
I think the burnt smell comes from the monitor.
Pulled out the MPU tray 1st, no smell.
Unplugged & pulled the CRT and noticed faint burnt odor.
Stuck head in upper & lower cabinet & think the CRT was the strongest.

Are the beeps part of a normal boot up or putting out an error code?

I just used warm water and mild soap, then wiped with wet cloth.
As for the smell coming from the CRT... hmmm - might be a capacitor? Chris should chime in soon.

Swapped out monitors (with a dead one).
Left on for 2 minutes with no smell.

Hard to say whats burning. Probably the voltage regulator or one of those white resistors. It is very clean and I don’t think it’s smoke residue.
It would be nice to hook it up on the bench but you absolutely must use an isolation transformer to do that. Unless the monitor has enough wire for you to set it on something outside of the case. The door doesn’t need to be closed for the monitor to power on.

Also, that monitor doesn’t auto-discharge so don’t remove the anode cup on the tube unless you have a discharge tool or screwdriver with a wire.

If I extend just the power cable, can I run it with out video signals without causing damage?

Powered it up looking for hot spots, lasted a few seconds and screen went dead.

Looks like this is going to take awhile, so am going to move the machine inside where it's not so cold.

Those WG monitors manage power differently than modern CRTs. They used those big white resistors which are notorious for creating heat and thus cracked solder joints If any of them is broken or out of circuit it causes a multitude of issues. As Shortrackskater mentioned its possible the voltage regulator is failing and generating excessive heat and shutting down.
You need to do a lot of solder reflow and check the ICs with a diode checker. That monitor is similar in design to the larger K7000s and there are dozens of repair videos on Youtube by Mikes Arcade monitor repair. He works on arcade monitors which will have some differences but similar in how to troubleshoot.

Thanks Chris,  I've done a few Ceronix, but this is my first aside from those.  I'll take a look

Had to move the cabinet inside as it's too cold in the garage.  Have to give it a good cleaning before I can do much.  Smells alot like shortrackskater described above.
The monitor looks to have been changed somewhat recently, as it's not as bad as the rest of the cabinet.

Your monitor chassis looked really clean. I work on boards that have a lot of gunk and they don’t smell all that bad. Unless something is getting excessively hot.

I can barely handle working out in my garage at night and Im in Southern CA. My solder station wont start up if its under 60 so I have to hold a lighter onto the tip to bring the temperature up. I can’t imagine being in the Midwest or northern states with no heat in the garage.

It's  rrrrreally a pain.  My old fingers get numb much quicker than they used too.  Got several steps into the house so I only take em inside if there is major effort needed.

Got the unit drug inside and the cleanup started.  Looks like the CRT issue will have to wait for a while.

The dead monitor appears to have been too much thermal grease oozing into the transistor socket & preventing good contact! !  (Never would have guessed something like that)

Looked the board over real close, and found nothing to reflow.  Power resistors all measured good.  Semiconductors diode drops all looked good except Horz output; low ohms across B to E (was the inductor).  Removed the transistor from socket and found the pins saturated in the white sticky thermal grease.  Cleaned the pins real good, sprayed the socket with contact cleaner and reassembled. Found same with power supply IC.

Is now working great !

I would love to see a picture of the machine working! Congratulations on getting the monitor working, its amazing….those caps are probably 40 years old. Great work.
