how to swap reels in a bally 6000?

trying to help a guy long distance.  bally 6000 3 reels.  he knows nothing. he mailed me his cpu, dead battery. i installed a double AA battery holder and leave in mains. tested cpu in a friends game. worked well. mailed it to him and he is getting a code 40, reel initialization error.  the 3rd reel never spins.  i told him to swap reel 1 and 3, see then if reel 1 doesnt spin. problem is ive never removed a bally 6000 reel, so i couldnt tell him how to do it. from pics, it looks like you disconnect the 3 plugs . now in guessing the reel shelf assembly comes out? exactly how ? and then , how do you remove a reel to move it ?

Just loosen the screw at the front of the reel bracket. Lift up and then out. Try a reel calibration procedure first. Open the door, Hold the service button down, and on the outside of the door , on the deck far left, hold button down, keep holding don't let go , press test button on MPU until you get to 05d  menu, the reels will start calibrating, let go of button, wait till reels finish the calibration, close the door. open and close the door 2 more time. See if the error clears.

i was going to have him try that, but with the third reel never budging, i thought it would be a waste of time. i'll have him give it a go. just to be clear, the test button is on the mpu.  not clear on what you mean by service button. the manual says this:

 Note: Holding CHANGE when entering
Test #5 initiates a reel calibration and
store the reel-stop center position in
SafeRAM™.

nothing about a service button

Yes Test on MPU.  The CHANGE button maybe labeled SERVICE on the outside players button deck

just got off the phone with the owner of the game. the clear process sometimes does the ch c , cl c . not always. doesnt always spin any reels, the just continuously jiggle.  after trying a clear, dip 8 back to off, when turned on the first 2 reels spun, then code 4.0 win paid.  now its not even spinning the 1st 2 reels. pressing the test button once doesnt get 1d in the win paid. 5 times doesnt get 5d.  he a ncie old guy i hate to give up on, but i think this might be going nowhere. anything we could try before we throw in the towel. keep in mind, i tried his board last week in a friends game, took 2 min to get it working well. thanks

He may not be getting it fully seated to the backplane. Make sure he pushes it in very firmly till it pops into place.
