Sigma 150 B plus Overpaid error

Working on a Black Diamond nine line model that is FINALLY working (changing settings finally seemed to clear the RAM) but now whenever it pays out, it gives out exactly 4 extra coins and throws the error. The manual implies that there is no motor brake, like other models have and this machine has an optical sensor, which appears to be working (otherwise how would it know to dispense 24 coins instead of 20 or 12 coins instead of 8? Something is counting, right?) When it dispenses, as it gets to the end, I can hear the motor “wind down” while dispensing the last few coins… like a brake didn’t engage when the the count was satisfied… Could find no real maintenance or troubleshooting other than clean the sensor or replace the hopper PCB or the main PCB… Any ideas on what to try next?

Do you see a brake on the motor? My SG has a typical hopper motor with a brake. It doesn’t have any special controls, it simply energizes and pulls away from the armature when the motor is powered. When power is removed the spring pulls it into the armature and instantly stops the motor.
Perhaps someone changed your motor or the spring is broken? Here are a few pictures.
The only type of motor I can think of that stops on a dime is a stopper motor and they didn’t use advanced technology for coin distribution, hoppers are extremely reliable.

Solved! Thanks Chris. This SG has a newer Hopper version than the one you show(with a plastic bin), but it still has a brake mechanism that is apparently powered when the motor is energized. The mechanism is held onto the motor by 2 screws that also secure a cover plate. If those screws are over tightened, the brake mechanism binds and does not engage. I was able to tweak it until it was free enough to allow the brake to work, but tight enough to hold the plate on. Works like a champ now!

I was working on a friend’s machine a few months ago and her hopper kept over paying. I took it to a friend and he thought the spring was bad so we worked on it together. It turned out the brake was sticking to the transformer body and didn’t return soon enough.it had a bur or something hit it, not sure why. I had to smooth out the surface of the brake plate with sandpaper. Keep that in mind for future reference.

I had that same "sticking" hopper brake problem...luckily I had spare hoppers and just swapped out the brakes.
