I have several machines but this particular one is giving me fits I hope someone can help. It has worked fine for 5 plus years until I lost the key to the bill box and had to drill the lock. I used a cordless drill but did not have the machine was off but not unplugged from the wall. I can’t imagine that caused the problem, maybe a coincidence. In any case the sound quit working. I first tested the speaker, it was fine but replaced it anyways. Traced the wires and they were good. The machine worked fine otherwise and I have used it without sound for a year but wanted to fix the sound. I did a clear on the board and now I hear beeps from the speaker on power up. But the machine got stuck with “power / reset   test mode   door open” on the bottom left, on the bottom right is says “demonstration” , in the middle it says “call attendant coin-in jam”.  I could not clear this message and thought maybe removing the memory batteries and reconnecting them might help but no joy.

I re-titled your subject. It needs to be machine specific, otherwise members will just skim right past this. We have a few members that may be able to help here. Give them some time to chime in.
We actually do have a Universal Video section; it's combined with Universal Reel. I've moved this to that forum.

Hello Cyhyam,

So the first thing I'd check is to make sure there are no coins(s) blocking either of the two photo eyes just below the coin comparitor. There's actually three eyes below the comparitor, only the top two are used. Take a look on the frontside of each eye, there's a small hole, if there's a coin blocking the eye a red LED will lite up. You can take a piece of paper and slide it down through the coin path to test the eyes. If the eyes are clear and functioning then reset the error using the reset key, turn it counter clockwise. If the error doesn't clear then try an all clear ram reset. There are two methods used to clear the RAM, they are explained in detail in the manual.

I checked the coin comparator thoroughly and there are no coins in it. The only red light I see is on the front (see picture), it is on continuous and does not change when putting a strip of paper through the coin chute. Since I didn’t get success with the light I didn’t reset. You should know this machine does not have a reset key. Also I do not have the manual for it.

It looks like the comparitor was updated to different model and the two grey photo eyes were removed. The lit red LED tells us there is power to the comparitor...normal. Since it was working the problem is probably elsewhere.

The only video poker manual we have is in the downloads section. It appears to be for an older XT model than what you have. You still may want to check it out though.

The manual refers to a reset key switch on the right side. If there is no key switch then look for a button(s) on the inside. Should be a simple method to reset an error code short of doing an "ALL CLEAR". Those errors displayed on the video screen should clear after using the reset "key" and closing the door.

When you performed an all clear did you use the jumper JP10? That pretty much wipes all the machine settings out and restores to default. If that's the case then that could be the reason for the coin comparitor error, the MPU is looking for a different type of photo eye. The volume setting is also done while in the service mode. Access to the machine setup menu was done via the cabinet key as well.

Sorry for the lack of detail. I do not have an XT to help walk you through the diagnostics and setup.

That is exactly what happened on a Sigma machine I worked on awhile back, it was set for a Mechanical coin mech. Once I set it for Optical the game started working.

So the thinking is if I find a mechanical comparator, plug it in place of the current one, get the machine to power up past the initilazition then I can put the current comparator back in and it should work?

When I did the all clear I jumped the 2 pins on the board labeled "CAUTION ALL CLEAR", I assumed I was jumping the correct pins.
There are no buttons on the inside or a reset key. There are a few connectors that have nothing plugged in but I am afraid to assume anything about them without a schematic.

The software typically looks for normally open or normally closed optical switches, the grey or black cased optics. You can unplug the coin comparitor to see if the error will clear due to an incorrect software setting, but you still have to acknowledge the error messages using the reset switch to verify the setting. Since the two grey or black optical switches have been removed a mechanical coin comparitor will not work.

The key switch on the right side served two purposes, reset error messages and enter the machine setup menu. There should be three wires used for the key switch. Two will be at 5 volts and one is the ground. You can momentarily ground either of the 5 volt wires and the errors will be acknowledged or the setup menu will open on the video screen.

That picture was very helpfull. I pulled out the monitor and found the 3 wires that were at one time connected to the reset switch. There is no switch but by jumping the wires I was able to get into the menu. I am playing with the menu trying things since I dont have the manual and flow chart.

I want to restore it and put a momentary lock switch back on it. Is the 5 volt line redundant or do I need a switch with 3 poles?

You need a switch with 3 poles, technically called Single Pole Double Throw.
The switch completes a connection to ground.

What I was asking is the switch spring loaded colokwise and counterclockwise? There are (2) 5 volt wires, ground the 5 volt wire does something different for each wire?

As Chris mentioned you'll need a single pole double throw switch, doesn't have to be a spring return to center, may be hard to find one anyway. I'd get a SPDT key switch for a 3/4" hole, it will be a three position switch, ON-OFF-ON. With the key in the center position the switch will be off and the key can be removed. The ground wire connects to the center position terminal, the RESET (5 volts) connects to right side terminal and the SETUP MENU (5 volts) connects to the left side terminal. You should be able to turn the switch clockwise for a RESET and counter clockwise for the SETUP MENU.

Also there is a manual in the downloads section that has a small section on the Universal XT and a bunch, including schematics, for the 8304. It will help you with some of the programing jargon.

I’m still struggling with this. The manual is a different model so marginally helpful. I see dip switches on the motherboard, have not moved any but curious what they do.

The coin-in jam is still the error on the screen. I have traced the wiring back to the motherboard header and they are good. In diagnostics when I jumper the connection at the comparator it shows the switch working. The screen shows test mode. I also reseated all the boards. Is there a way to bypass the coin jam?

I found this menu that changed to a default setting when I cleared the RAM.
There are several menu items that maybe need changing like “coin logic”, “coin in”, “coin mech”. These all have settings from 0 to 9. Any ideas what needs to change to get rid of the coin in jam error on boot up?
