On the back of the hopper is the payout relay.
Sometimes the cover is intact, but 85% of the time it’s missing.
There are stacks of contacts. The inside row is a little more difficult to clean.
Best to clean the front and rear contacts at the same time. Running the cleaning device all the way through. A bright flashlight is most helpful.

Checking for continuity before and after cleaning the contacts should be done.
Also, look for any broken wires, which is rare, but happens occasionally.

But since the machine was working, dirty contacts would be the most likely cause.

This might solve the problem, but there might be other issues like beau-pin plugs.
If it was a fuse the fluorescent lights would not work.

In most cases the blue white wires.
Or a green wire in conjunction with a black wire operate the hopper motor.

other thing to look at is whether the payout counter is resetting.  If it isn't, the game will only pay if the win is higher than a previous pay.

on the 1090, the payout counter is in the cabinet bottom and when reset, the wiper fingers are around the 6:00 position at the bottom of the disc.  Take a look and see where they are.

when you drop in the first coin, the coin unit in the top compartment should reset.  If the coin relay is tripping properly, then it can only be a plug connection, the reset coil on the coin unit or a mechanical problem.

first quick test is manually step up and reset the coin unit.  The wipers should whizz back to the reset stop on reset ... not dragging/stalling.  'course, it only has to move a couple step positions to reset, so if it's gummed up the wipers will probably just stick.

to test the coil, you can just measure it with an ohmeter looking for something below 100 ohms, or you can jumper power to it.  An example of jumpering power is:

Thanks DavidLee. I'm suspecting it is the payout solenoid or the B switch. The game was playing fine until last night and now it won't reset the payout. I have to manually press the plunger down and then it will reset and play fine but I have to do this after every payout now. I also see that my win meter is not resetting either after a payout, it just keeps adding to the total so I'm leaning towards the B switches or something before the solenoid.

B switch located on the left side of the reels chassis.
It is the horizontal switch between the A and C switches.
This switch will collect more debris due to its horizontal position.
Also, check the wires to the coil and the pin connections at the beau-plugs.
Sometimes when you move the reels and or the hopper chassis.
The machine reveals a bad pin to socket connection.
This can be done by moving the chassis slightly in all directions.
Try it on a payout.

the common factor in the reset circuit for both the above is the "payout counter open-at-0" switch mounted in front of the spiral cam.  If should be closed when the payout counter is stepped up, open when the payout counter is reset.

if you have a jumper, you can jumper the zero switch always closed to verify if it's the problem.  It's just there so the reset coils don't fire if they don't need to, but it's harmless if they do.

correct operation of the switch is close on the first step of the payout counter, but practically it just needs to be closed at the end of the minimum payout - typically two steps.

Yep, looks like this was my problem. I cleaned the switch and had to sort of tinker with it to adjust it closed and open upon step of the payout. Seems to all be working 100% now. Gonna have a couple adult beverages and see how it does. Thanks for all the help guys!!
