Newbie with a monitor issue

Hello! Thanks for having this forum!!
New to the slot game. Recently got a nice working fortune 1. I figured it would be a good idea to get a parts machine, so I found a nice cheap one. After getting it home I decided it was too nice to part out. But the monitor just shows a white star in the center with while lines going up and down from the star. I put my good working monitor in but it just shows a white/light blue. I attached a picture of it. My understanding is these monitors are repairable. But what's stumping me is why the good monitor doesn't show. it appears that everything else work. I can get more pictures later when I get home from work. thanks in advance.
Also is there a place to get parts for these machines? Id like to get the coin trays for them as well.

Most likely the game board isn’t booting. Does it accept quarters and let you deal?
In other words, does it play blind? The game board has no idea if the monitor works so if the computer works it should play blind.
The monitor you have in it appears to be an RGB1401. Just hope it works. They can be repaired but no one works on them anymore, I won’t touch an RGB1401 any more. You could possibly send it to Sharp Image in Las Vegas, they work on monitors exclusively.
However, I still suspect the computer isn’t running. You need to take some voltage readings. The transformer on the tray puts out 24vac I think (verify by looking at schematics), then on the board it is rectified into 5V DC for the computer.

You're correct on it being a 1401. I put the good one back in and now im getting this.... I do not believe it blind plays. the coin counter doesn't do anything. I tried putting the main board tray in my other game and it gave me the scrambled screen and it also did let count counter work...but the speaker is making noise... any advice?

Yup, that indicates the board is putting garbage out which is somewhat good. Most likely the video circuit is powered up but the game circuit is not running properly. Also, those boards have problems with capacitors and also the pots that adjust the individual colors.
Pull the board and carefully lift any I.C. that is in a socket then re-seat it. If you have never done this watch a video on how to lift ICs without damaging them. Only lift one IC at a time, if you see any oxidation use an eraser to gently clean the pins. Also take a picture of the board first in case you forget what direction the IC was facing.

I did check the voltages. The transformers are working. But I dont know how to check the main board. I will do some more digging on it tonight. thank you again. if its out of my skill range is there a place I can send it?

Oh yes, one of the leading experts on Fortune machines is fellow NLG member Badbaud, he is the tech at K-Lar. You can find their contact email on the home page of supporting vendors.
He has a test station and will get your board all tuned up.
Those games are very robust and once he tunes it up you will probably get another 40 years out of it. In truth, it really should be done. Those capacitors and potentiometers are pretty old.

ok did some more digging tonight. swapped the board and monitor from my working machine and boom. working game. the buttons dont work like they should.... so I swapped out the main chip on the boards..... so in my ramblings here I have concluded that I need this chip or this chip reprogramed. as neither board will function with it in the game.

That’s a processor, no programming needed. It just processes data, it’s the computer chip. You swapped it out and verified it’s bad? That would be an odd failure, not impossible but it seems like any event that would kill the processor would kill a lot of other components.

Yep. I put that chip in my good board and it wouldn't work. I put the good chip in the bad bod and it also didnt work. The only way I could get it to work was with my good board with original condition. But the gaming buttons didnt work like the read. my good machine has the simple set up. Draw 5 holds a cancel and deal button. The other has draw/deal. 5 hold/cancel. bet on bet 5 and collet.
with my good board in it draw/deal works as should. the bet 5 is how you would make it deal if you only put a few coins in. hold buttons only hold and the bet 1 is the cancel......
if I am reading correctly are you saying there is another chip on the board I need to look at? I pulled all the big ones that had info on them and cleaned them. If so you could show me which one please.

Just lift and clean any IC that was in a socket.
Based on what you said I don’t think you did any test that verified that the processor is actually bad.
Did you put that processor in a good working board in a known correct machine?
At this point I would question if the board has the correct game proms but I wont be able to help with that. I am not literate in Fortune series file names.
I think there are too many variables for this to be resolved remotely unless you have equipment to test capacitors in-circuit and you know what proms the game needs.

Its a IGT fortune one. It looks complete but there could be any number of issues on the board that would cause problems with game play. Its possible one of the IC sockets has corrosion or a bad trace or solder joint.
