AVP 66001 Universal Slant "no valid installation type found"
« on: October 13, 2025, 11:42:12 pm »
Hello everyone, this is my first time posting so I hope I do it right.

I have an IGT AVP Universal slant with Five Star Poker on it, im not 100% sure on the brainbox model but the green sticker on the front (which I will include pictures of) says AVP 66001 and the white sticker says 50066001WR.

The other day we had a power outage which took the game next to this down, our techs attempted to troubleshoot that game by swapping this games CPU and IO board into it (not sure what they were attempting to troubleshoot), upon reinstalling CPU and IO board into this game we received errors "no bootable device found" when trying to boot, with and without diag 14-21 installed and with and without ekey 7 installed, and finally with and without both diag and ekey installed. Batteries in CPU and IO board have been tested and are good, and double checked ribbon cable was secure on both ends and not damaged. After this we replaced the hard drive and it allowed us to boot into the diag and wipe the drive, after wiping the drive we insert OI0200200605 and it boots up and says attempts the install and returns an error stating "no valid installation type found" I have tried so many things and this game has been down for a month now and I would really like to get it back up but im at a loss and cant seem to find anything about this specific issue anywhere online. :banghead:

Please let me know if there is any more information or pictures needed for assistance.

Thank you

It looks like you're trying to load an AVP 4.0 OS file onto an AVP 3.0 box.

The OS loader should be named A!014XXX.   With that OS, if you wipe the drive and NVRAM with the diag key, power off, and use an OS in that naming format plugged in, with the ekey plugged in as well, it should load the OS to the drive at that point and ask you to reboot.

Remove the loader and ekey, then power up again, and it should take you to initial setup where you can complete initial machine configuration, and load the game to the machine and configure it.

Then the machine should operate normally again.

Excellent!

Always good to hear when something can be fixed up relatively easily and be running again.   That's not always the case.  :)

Also, just in case you need to know what brainbox you have.  That's an AVP 3.0 model 660 brainbox.  Best model you can get for AVP 3.0 in my opinion.

But the 660 model brainboxes have no on-board video.  So they must always have the add on PCIe video card installed.  Which is the best video possible for AVP 3.0 machines.

Other model brainboxes with the same power connectors on them have on-board video, one VGA for the primary touchscreen and a DVI port for the top display, and don't have the add on PCIe video card.  (But they can)

I've setup a lot of AVP machines and have four myself, two are MLD screen machines.   And in my own testing, I've found all AVP machines actually work just fine with brainboxes using the on-board video.  For machines with MLD screens, many MLD games list that they must have the add on E4690 video card.   However, I've tested MLD machines using a brainbox with just on-board video, and it would seem even MLD machines run just fine with on-board video, and I was never blocked from installing/running MLD games for not having the add on PCIe card.  And there was no noticable difference in video quality.  I just prefer the 660 that has the card because there's nothing higher to upgrade to on AVP 3.0 machines.

However other brainboxes which have on-board video ports, still have the PCIe slot on them for the add on video card so it can be "upgraded".  And the same model E4690 PCIe video card can be plugged in as well, making them pretty much the same as a 660.  But since they also have the on-board video hardware present, unlike the 660 box, they "can" function without the add on PCIe card installed.  With the PCIe card installed on a brainbox with on-board video ports, it simply disables the on-board video in favor of the more powerful PCIe video card when it's present.  I'm sure opinions will vary on having the PCIe video card or not on different machines.  That's just been my observation.   :)
