Crystal Dual 27 - Button panel Offline, Dynamic Player Panel Offline

I was playing my Crystal Dual 27 for about a half hour, everything was working perfectly.  I stepped away to do some other things for an hour or so  and when I came back, the machine had put itself Out of Service with the following messages:

Button Panel Offline - Main Button Panel - Please Correct the Error

Device Offline - Touch Screen Offline ID: Button Panel Digitizer - Please Correct the Error

The Main Door is getting power.  The Main Door control panel shows the solid green light for 12V and 24V.  The Player Touch Panel shows an image during boot and a game image while running, but remains unresponsive.  All buttons are non-responsive and unlit.

There is not a green light at the connected USB back plane socket, nor is there a green light at USB socket J2 under the Main Door.
The Main Door switch indicator on the upper right corner of the lower screen does not go off, even if the switch is manually depressed. The bright blue LED light does come on.

In short, there's no communication with the Button Panel or Dynamic Player Panel or Main Door switch.

Here's what i've done so far:
1.) Rebooted. Same errors.
2.) Ran Diagnostics.  Machine didn't recognize the buttons or Player Touch Panel
3.) Switched USB ports on the back plane, no hotswaps.  Same errors.
4.) Connected a different USB cable from back plane to USB socket J2 on Main Door. Same errors.
5.) I read somewhere that a burned out LED in a Smash Button may cause errors.  I'm not sure how to take out the Smash Button LEDs.  Any instruction here would be appreciated.
6.) Considering as a last option that it may be a software issue, I wipe everything clean, set up the SSD and reloaded the OS, the Ascent, and the BIOS.  During the Diagnostic test the machine does not acknowledge or recognize the button panel or the Player Touch Panel for any diagnostics.  Consequently, no drivers for the button panel or dynamic player panel appear on the screen as being loaded.

I'm perplexed as to why the machine suddenly malfunctioned while sitting idle.  I can see where a bulb spontaneously fails.  Could this be the cause for such a catastrophic failure?  I'd appreciate any and all suggestions and insights.

I wanted to add closure to my previous post.  It's taken a while.

In retrospect, I have concluded that an old cheap power strip combined with an electrical storm burned out the PCB controlling the player deck.  This, in turn, caused the player deck to stop communicating with the brainbox, and therefore threw the error messages. I partially disassembled the player deck and sent off the portion containing the glass, PCB and LCD components for repair.

Upon receipt of the "repaired" player deck, I was replacing the mash button assemblies with new ones when I cracked the glass. Bummer.  I purchased the new glass and have successfully reinstalled everything.  The player deck works perfectly.

My recommendations:
* Get the best surge protector you can find.  I'll be a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run.
* Take you time when making repairs.  The underside of these player decks are generally pretty sticky from spilled drinks and there are a ton of small, various sized screws.

A power surge certainly can cause problems.

I would have liked to have been able to get a schematic of the PCB.  It is likely that there was a fuse on the PCB that opened which killed that particular communication circuit.  Then again, having that schematic may have only added to my mind-crushing frustration.
