Bally 1090 Reel / Clock Question

My 1090 dollar machine has started acting up. Sometimes the first reel will kick off then almost immediately stop. I took the reel mechanism out of the machine to see what is going on and everything seems to be correct and it kicks and spins like it should but every now and then the first reel (sometimes the 2nd also) will only spin for about a 1/4 turn. It seems to be related to the clock because when I hold the clock fan before I pull the handle all 3 reels will spin correctly every time. Kind of has me scratching my head at the moment.

The reel mech is most likely gummed up with old oil. Work 3-1 oil into every part that pivots, turns, rotates, etc.. With the reels out, locate the top shaft that the 3 index levers pivot on. You ought to be able to rotate this with 2 fingers without the index levers moving. Next look at the bottom rear of the mech and there is another large shaft that has tubular spacers on it between the links. Everything on this including the spacers, with the exception of the parts that are pinned, should easily slide sideways 1/8”-1/4”.  Next go through the smaller shafts and do the same.

usually when a reel indexes immediately the pawl didn't engage well.

could be gunk on the pawl pivot points as slcjeeper mentioned, or could be the reels are kicking a little too early.  You can try moving the L-shaped stop bracket at the bottom/rear of reel mech a little bit toward the front.

typically the right edge of the stop bracket is around 1/16" left of the edge of the mech frame.

if you move the stop bracket too far, the handle will bottom out before the reels kick and get stuck there.  Then you need to manually cause the game to kick per the pic below.

a cracked roll/tension pin that connects the clock to the timer shaft can cause the problem also.  When the reels kick, the sloppy connection between the clock and shaft lets the timer shaft that is controlling the latch links rotate too much initially.

First reel trip mechanism is hard to clean due to its location next to the chassis.
As stated before, every part needs to move freely including jack-shafts and bushings.
In the trip mechanism there’s a small oval looking part that will malfunction due to grime.

Best to remove the reels chassis, place it on cardboard and newspaper then prop it up on the right side.
Apply penetrating oil to all moving parts. Do this a few times over a 24 hour period.
Then clean off any excessive oil, add fresh machine oil once to help remove any remaining penetrating oil.
Clean excessive oils and add fresh oil again. Let it run through the parts, then remove excess oil.

Regarding the clock, it acts as a transmission to slow the process down giving the reels a chance to spin at random. If the clock becomes disengage the reels will stop immediately or not spin it all.

That's sort of what seems to be happening. Majority of the time the reels kick and spin with no issues but every now and then they will kick and the first reel stop lever will immediately come back to the reel disc.

I would say the clock is okay, since the reels work properly 98% of the time.
Do the recommended cleaning particularly on the first reel mechanism.
Also, make sure the wiper/slot index arms are moving freely.
All three should snap back at a consistent speed.

one other thing ... note the link/bar that is moving the timer shaft has variable length due to the ratchet that rotates on every pull.

if your problem happens in kind of a pattern and occurs when the link is longest, the game is probably kicking the reels a little too early.

a worn/cracked roll pin or an issue with the clock can get hidden when the link is different lengths.

one test is flip up the bar that spins the ratchet and set the link to the longest and shortest positions by manually spinning the ratchet, the see if the problem is more repeatable with the link at either extreme.

Ok Guys, I went through it all and lubricated every moving part on the reel mech with penetrating oil and that seems to have helped a lot. It still hangs up but not nearly as much so I must have missed something so I'll go back through it but it seems like I'm real close to having it fixed, or at least I was. Now for some reason all of a sudden the coins stopped tripping the handle latch or activating the step up in the upper unit? When I push the coin switch on the door I can hear the coin relay solenoid engage on the lower left side of the reel mech but nothing else happens. I wonder if maybe I used too much penetrating oil on it and caused another issue?

This is my 3rd reel machine and I swear this one will be the death of me! At this point I feel exactly how my Avatar looks! LOL

Yes, you might want to take a look at the coin relay.
As it un-latches other sets of contracts mate up.
Un latch the switch stack and check for continuity on the closed contracts.

Well you guys are right again. I found an old post about the same coin problems someone else was having and I watched an old video Wolftalk made about adjusting the stack next to the coin relay and as luck would have it my machine started working again. Looks like I may have just been too aggressive when I lubed the reel mech.

Anyway, I’m back in business! Who wants to buy a very well oiled 1090!! Lol
