Need help and advice with IGT AVP

I have a chance to purchase an IGT AVP for about $400.  It looks complete from what I can tell. Problem is..I have no experience with these machines..nor do I know the model or if it's even worth fixing. The top screen says "no IGT signature found". Not sure what that means. Am I buying a boat anchor or is there hope?

It's an S-AVP. (reels)  You will need a $400+ ekey7 and a diag USB to start with.  Pics are too small to tell much.

Assuming I get this machine..are these easy to set up? Can the diag USB and ekey7 be used in other machines or is it specific to that machine? I assume they come out o ce the machine is set up. These machines have a hard drive?

Maybe I can help a little.  I acquired a MLD AVP several months ago at a pretty significant discount and have been stumbling through a learning and refurbishing process, with the help and patience of some experienced NLG members and EBay. My experience has been that between the time and money you invest in the refurbishing process, you'll pretty much approach what you would have paid for a fully functioning machine.  Nevertheless, for me working on them is about as much fun as playing them, IF you can eventually fix an issue.

Here's my limited knowledge:
There were at least three versions - a SAVP (has reels with a top monitor), an AVP (two monitors with the bottom one being single dimension), and an AVP MLD (two monitors with the bottom one being three dimensional, hence Multi Level Display)  There were also different monitor sizes - 20", 22", and 23".

There were at least two versions of the brain box - a 625 (2 GB x 2 RAM sticks and 80 GB HD or SSD) and a 660 (same RAM and HD/SSD, with an e4690 Video Card to help out the MLD versions.)

My machine is a MLD V2, and I put in a 660 BB.  It also has the infamous Dynamic Edge Lit buttons, which each have an LED surrounded by an lit edge that changes color with the game actions.  I had to replace 10 of the 14 buttons, and they ain't cheap.  Your SAVP probably has different buttons, but could likely be upgraded.

As previously mentioned, you'll need an EKey and a Diagnostic Key 014-21.  The EKey will work on a Crystal Dual, when you upgrade.  You'll have to get another Diagnostic Key when you upgrade.

I believe that your SAVP will have a 625 BB, and will run specific Family 14 reel games.  Some people have upgraded their AVP's to run Family 20 games.  Don't know if there are any Family 20 games for a SAVP.  I'd check with one of NLG members for available software.

That about taps out my knowledge base, right or wrong.  There's no pride of authorship, so any one please chime in and correct any errors.  Good luck!

I'm not sure if that helped or confused me. .but at least I know more then I did. My experience is with S+, S2000, Bally 9000, and Konami advantage 5. And a couple of AC Coin and slot machines.  I have 2 of each, and I'm always tinkering with them. This is a new project for me, but being retired..I have the time. He's giving the machine to me for $300. I'm pulling the trigger and picking it up today. My initial focus will be getting it up and running. I'll post some better pics over the weekend and I'm sure I'll need help. I see the ekeys on Ebay for about $400. Haven't found a diagnostic key yet but in sure I will.

What's the price range to buy one of these machines up and running? I'm sure if/when I do get it set up...I'm keeping it in the collection.  Just curious.  I agree..working on a machine is just as fun as playing them. I've learned alot over the years. .and still buying when I find the ones people practically give away. Can't help it. $300 sounds like a great deal even if I'm all in with parts and keys for about $1000. Looks like a fun machine

These types of challenges with our machines are how we learn more about them and our friends on this forum.  I lifted this from a post by RodneyK, who has has helped me:

Generally No Signature is:
Boot Chip 2
PCI card issue
Hard drive not plugged in
Ribbon cable

Great troubleshooting list from another forum.

OK, it seems that the Top red LED on the interface board is on.  That means there is an error as reported by U1 on the interface board.  Here is a basic flow I use when troubleshooting CPUs.

1.  When you power on with nothing except the power and CPU connected;  CPU lite OFF - Fans ON.

2.  Add Memory DIMM - CPU lite OFF - Fans ON.

3.  Add CPU boot chip-1 - AVP Banner OK - No signature found error on screen.

4.  Remove memory - CPU reports beeping error.

5.  Add Interface board without boot chip-2 - CPU reports beeping error. 7 Lites lit on top of interface board.

6.  Add Memory DIMM - AVP Banner OK, No signature found error on screen.

7.  Add boot chip-2 to memory board - No motherboard connection reported on screen and constant reboots.

8.  Add ribbon interface cable from interface board to motherboard - Normal startup

 

So basically - CPU with no memory should error beep.

CPU fans should always work if you have power.

CPU with memory and boot chip-1 should provide you video AVP Splash screen.

Interface board properly plugged in will always give 7 lites on the top with no front panel red LED error.

Unfortunately I decided that it's a machine that's out of my expertise.  I read what everyone wrote, and played with it for a bit. I checked all the batteries, removed and reseated boot chip 2, checked all cables and wires..etc.  I was going to order EKey7, and dia 014-21. .which I'm told there's no way around it. You need both. Ekey7 costs about $400. Not a big deal since I paid $300 for the machine. The diagnostic key? I found people selling them for $30..and others asking $130. I have ZERO experience with these machines so I'd probably buy the wrong one. Then I've read posts where people had the same machine...and they have both the ekey7 and a diagnostic key..and still can't get it ti work. I think I'm going to stick to machines I do know and sell this one for parts.

I did notice that after I checked everything and reseated boot 2, the message "no igt signature found" had disappeared when I booted back up. Not that it matters. Before I invest more into this machine, I'm going to cut bait and see who needs what parts. I can't fix it. I don't have the knowledge..but my machine will help others fix theirs
