New member, trying to fix an S plus that was gifted to me

Hi folks,
I was gifted an S 2000 S plus which doesn’t work. The chips on the MPU have a 1997 year on them, so I’m assuming that’s the age of the machine. When I turn it on, I do get a number 12 error message and have discovered that’s to replace the battery on the MPU. I have ordered a battery holder to solder in place of the existing soldered in battery. I will start there.

The MPU board, also has a key slot at the top of it, which I believe is the reset switch. I have ordered a push button switch to replace the key slot as I don’t have the key.

Once I do those two things, I’m hoping either that the machine powers up and works or that another error message shows up with a simple fix, but this is where I am going to need all the help in the world, because I am not familiar with these machines at all.

I will post as many pictures as I can, please excuse my incompetency. I greatly appreciate any opinions and or recommendations that you may have to share

You don't need the MPU lock key for home use.
Disconnect the wires going to it and remove the lock.

Your reset switch is the jackpot reset keyswitch on the outside of the machine above the pull handle.
It is a momentary keyswitch that is spring-loaded to return to center...say 12 o'clock.
Much of of the time when we use it, we basically just turn it from 12 o'clock to like 3 o'clock, and let go.
It springs back to center.
Once you replace the battery, you may get a [61] code.
That's not a problem, just follow the instructions in this link I've attached below for you, to get rid of it...>>>

oh before I forget, in your photo of the MPU, I noticed that only the first 3 dipswitches on that blue dipswitch box are pressed down...press down the 4th dip above them with something pointy.
Dipswitches 1 to 4 should be ON, while dips 5 to 8, should be OFF for home use.

Thank you so much for your reply!! I kept seeing references to a reset switch inside of the box and thought I was missing one, especially because the videos also referred to the outside reset switch. Fortunately, I have the key for that one.

Question about the keyhole switch on the inside, do I remove the key hole and connect those two wires together?

If the machine doesn’t have a key in the reset on the outside of the machine It should be key 2341. Someone here can confirm if that still holds true on newer machines.

There IS a Test switch inside the machine....that's different from the Reset key.
The little white momentary test switch allows you to get into the menus of the machine.
It can be located on the front of the power switch box or behind it.

I want to point out to you that you do NOT have an IGT S2000 slot machine.
You actually have an older model, made in the late 80's called an IGT S+.

Wow! This is awesome! Thanks again! I saw S+’s on the generic user guide and I thought mine looked more like a 2000 picture, I’m clueless. I appreciate you all letting me know that!

Chris, I thought I looked thoroughly for a reset button and couldn’t find one anywhere. I’ll keep looking. Now that I know it’s an S+, I can dive deeper. Thank you all!

That MPU keyswitch on top of the MPU tray, remove it and tuck the wires away somewhere...don't short them together.

Thanks again for all of this info! I’m waiting on the new battery and I’m installing a “holder” with it. Once that gets here, and it’s installed, I’m sure I’ll be back for more help! Thanks again people! This is exciting for me!

Hi all, it’s me again, Mr. S plus, trying to make something happen. I have replaced the battery holder and added a battery. I also switched the number four dip switch to on, as it was off before. If the little red light on my MPU was supposed to turn on once I had the battery, it did not. I have not tested the battery yet.

I closed the door and turned on the machine and immediately had a 61 error. I read up on the 61 error and pressed the restart switch behind my on off switch inside the machine, heard a ding, fully closed the front door, and use the external reset key. I then got a 61–1 error code. I have repeated that a few times and nothing has changed.

This is way above anything I have done before so I really appreciate any additional advice you can share.

Just to be clear...  Are you following the 61 procedure as outlined in this post?

I hadn’t noticed it before but my receiver door optic white wire is broken off. That doesn’t look like something I can just fix. I’m going to order new door optics and get back to the forum once those arrive. Any recommendations?

Here’s an enlarged pic of one I had on my phone.

Full disclosure: a when I got the machine, the white wire was just dangling there. I screwed the white wire to the top screw thinking it had broken off from there as I thought (with my bad vision) that the red wire was on the lower screw. I didn’t realize until this morning that they both went into the back of the optic together and the screws were just there to hold the optic on the machine. Now removed, the whole wire is just hanging there

If the red wire isn't connected to the cabinet receiver optic, it will never "see" or receive the infrared light coming out of the door emitter optic.
You do need to get yourself a new set...make sure the optic with the red and white wires are on the cabinet side.
The optic with the black and red wires goes on the door.

When the machine thinks the door is open you will get a fast flash on the bottom 1/2 of the candle.

Process of elimination, got the door code to disappear (61-1), thanks to Jim and his amazing sensors! I’m still getting a fast blinking of the lower yellow light on the candle. I checked the idle door (I anssume that’s the front drop down door) and it’s closed securely. When I open and close it, the candle does go off for about 10 seconds and starts back up again. I opened the door and held down the sensor and it didn’t same thing, off for about 10 seconds and then starts back up again with a fast blink. Also, I don’t know if it’s related, but the quarters seem to drop straight through as well, but again, one small step at a time.
