Universal Jackpot 7 - Model 8515, coin comparator / wiring issues

Hello, I've got what looks to be a late 80's Universal Model 8515.  I just got it, prior owner said it was not working and thought it was due to a stuck coin?

I've done some research and read a lot of posts in forums, but still need help to hopefully get it functional.

I'm thinking the main problem is in the coin detection system.  The coin comparator was loose and laying inside the cabinet when I first opened the door.

Wires going to the comparator seem to be missing / disconnected, and I'm not sure its the correct one?

Can somebody help with where the wires need to go?  (Photos for included for reference)

The 2 loose wires to the left (blue and purple) have no voltage and one of them seems to have continuity to ground.

The 3 wires to the right (blk, brown and blue) go to a connector that has 2 wires coming out heading to comparator (blk and yellow) The black seems to be ground and the yellow wire has 34 volts DC then travels through a resistor? on its way.

Also the grey internal wires that look to go to the 2 pin board connector at top seem to be severed.

First a few of questions:
 - Is this nickel, quarter or dollar machine?  Any decals on the reel glass displaying the denomination?
 - Does the machine power up okay otherwise, appear to be ready to play?
 - Are the reel glass LED display's working?

The coin comparitor wiring's in rough shape but it will not cause an LED error message or stop the machine from playing credits. Most of the problems are due to a coin jamb which has to be dug out to permit good coins to pass through. There's a rake inside to simply reject the good coins from the bad. Some comparitors have a divertor solenoid on the backside to reject all coins if the main CPU board bet limit has been reached. You will need to reconnect the wiring to use or replace with a mechanical one (no electronics). See below for a couple of photos of the wiring connections. I'm not seeing the grey wires for the solenoid on the backside so omit those connections. Once the wires are connected as shown the comparitor will power up when the main switch is turned on, a red LED will light up on the CC16. Just have to add the desired coin in the holder to be ready.

Odds are the coin detection issue is with the coin sensor led set just below the comparitor. The coins pass through these eyes and send the signals to the CPU. If they're broken, dirty, lost power, programmed incorrectly or out of alignment the signals will not get back to the CPU correctly and it will pop an error.

First lets fix the wiring for the CC16 and inspect the photo eyes just below it then we'll move forward from there.

Nickel, and labeled as such on face glass. (although I noticed the hopper has a 25 cent sticker, not sure that matters?)

Powers up, lights up, LED in glass seem to be working.

Because I cant get credits loaded on the machine I can test functionality.

There are no jammed coins anywhere I can see.  Coins just fall through.

There is a nickel in the holder.

Error codes I have seem have been 50 (door), 11, 13, 22, 31.  I have reset board via button, tried all test / reset buttons and keys switched switched and still shows 50 and 13 codes.

The grey wires are there, just not connected to 2 pin slot at top of comparator.

I do not see any photos, if you have added some to this post, to help in wiring of the coin comparator.

Nickle sticker on the glass and a Nickle in the CC16...should be good there. We'll need the wires connected to work properly otherwise the coins will pass through to the tray. My concern would be the coins aren't blocking the photo eyes 100% as they pass through the slot. We'll check the hopper later.

Are any wires connected to the grey wires on the backside of the CC16?

With the main door open press the red service sw button one time and see if a credit is entered in the coins played LED. If so press the spin button and see if the reels spin.

Errors:
   50-door was open (normal)
   11-low incoming voltage
   13-power interruption (normal)
   22-excessive coins
   31-hopper overpay

   The codes should clear after the first play.

Codes 22 & 31 may be due to an issue with the CPU board setup. Is there a SUB board in position A1 socket with an 8 pin DIP and some IC chips? The DIP is used to setup the eyes. In most cases the CPU must be programmed for the grey or black photo eyes. With some system Eproms the settings are in the program and the DIP isn't needed. The eyes are used for the door latch, coins and pull handle. Please post a picture of the CPU board, with the top cover off.

I see there's a micro switch on your door latch so the door must closed and locked for the machine to play. For now though I'd tape the micro switch lever down until the machine is running properly.

So we'll need the micro switch taped closed, the CC16 wired up, try a coin test with the red button and a photo of the CPU board.

I hooked up grey wires per diagram, and now it gives credits for nickels as they pass through to the hopper!

Pressing the red service button or the green test button does not seem to do anything (no credits or change in face numerical led displays).

After loading 3 credits per nickel I pulled the arm and it spins all 3 reels but they never stop and its now shows code 43 (problem with 3rd reel)?

The DIP's are set for a 1200 credit limit, credit select, Grey coin photo eyes, Standard Hopper, Grey pull handle photo eye and MAX bet at start - off.

There's allot of corrosion around the Nimh battery.  It should be cleaned off with a small stiff brush. Ideally the area cleaned with a brush and some electronics cleaner. The battery is probably due for a change too with a Nimh 3.6v (must be a rechargeable).

As for the third reel error, first check to make sure it's plugged in all the way. Sometimes the wires get pulled loose from the plug connectors. Also on many machines there's a forth Molex plug next to the third reel plug. It's there for the fourth reel option. Swap the two and then try it. Could be a dirty or bad photo eye on the reel assembly. Check this stuff with the power off.

You have a good eye and a wealth of knowledge, so thankful.

I swapped the #3 wheel wires with the #2 real wires.  No change in code, still 43 and all wheels spinning continuously.

I've pulled the wheels, and I am cleaning "eyes", and tab on wheels with isopropyl. I also lubricated the outside rotor shaft bearing where exposed.

I will report result.

When you swapped Molex plugs from reel two to reel three and still had an error code #43 you've pretty much eliminated the reel photo eyes as the problem. Take a look at the #3 reel Molex plug which is connected to the reel deck harness and check for broken wires or the metal pins pulled out of the plastic housing. The grey, black & pink wires go back to the CPU board. The 3rd reel plug pins should look like the spare 4th reel plug.

Also have a look at the CPU board edge connectors. Look for damaged foils on the top and bottom of the connectors. CPU board connector pad ECN-2C is the input signal from the #3 reel photo eye. 

Odds are the coin hopper has been modified for nickels. We can test it once the reels are up and running.

Sounds logical.  I did take each wheel assembly out while cleaning, and swapped #1 wheel with #3. All still spinning after.  Ill check pins and connection points tomorrow.
