Ram error
« on: May 16, 2026, 08:16:27 pm »
I just picked up a s2000 that is dated Feb 2004. It looks to be straight off the golden nugget casino floor. Complete with their tickets ready to print.

Everything seems to work as should except for the ram error.

After pulling the mpu it appears both batteries have never been replaced. There is some corrosion coming out of the varta and I am hoping it hasn’t  done too much damage.

It appears the user name Lookes is the person that is really good at this job. I would love to get a quote to send the mpu in. I tried to message him but the forum wouldn’t let me. Maybe because I am a new user?

Update: After turning the jackpot key 3-4 times I was able to get it to initialize and then cycle between main battery low and door open MB and then it cycled maybe door closure mb? I assume this is still a battery problem. I was just so excited to see the reels move!

Door closure MB is a good sign!  The door traces are still functional. Get that coin battery replaced and varta removed ASAP.

I must admit this is far out of my comfort zone. I don’t own a solder gun and even if I did I don’t think I would be brave enough to attempt this delicate repair. I am hoping I can send it to a professional and the board isn’t too far gone. The rest of the machine looks to be in impeccable condition for its age (unlike myself)

I responded to your PM, I think? It doesnt show it in sent items but maybe I didnt save a copy to my outbox. Anyway, that is a very good price and hope to ship it to you tomorrow. My skill level is below novice but I am hoping this is the machine that gets me into this hobby. I have had so much tinkering around with it already.

That's a lot of corrosion. Even if cleaned, it probably already penetrated the solder mask and you won't be able to stop the corrosion.  I would simply replace the board.

It actually cleaned up pretty good! It's up and running.
There was a lot of corrosion. Most of it not very deep, but widespread. It always gets under the conformal coating. I remove it. Sometimes all that is left of the trace is a furrow in the board. lol.. This one actually only had one open trace, but others that were swiss cheese and would have been open soon.

Do you remove the polymeric film to clean the acid?
I'd rather send MPU's to you...or tell people you work on them.
This sounds like painstaking work!

I use strong chemicals, ultrasonic cleaning, and physical methods to remove the corrosion, and 'reveal' the damage. Then I use various methods to repair the damage.  I can't fix them all. If they get really bad, parts fall off while I am cleaning them.
