Hopper, motor hums, but doesn't rotate.
« on: May 31, 2026, 05:22:34 pm »
I have an s plus with an hopper motor that when energized unlocks the brake and hums , but the hopper does not rotate. I can manually release the brake and turn it by hand. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the motor?

Common issues are
1. Coin or coins wedged in coin exit trough. You might have to
2. Motor gummed up, never use WD40 or any such lubricant, rather use an electronics cleaner or maybe brake cleaner, just beware of overspray
3. Brake is stuck, even though you can hear it.
4. Knife is not sitting on smooth edge of shelf and is wedged in coin tabs.

You can run hoppers on the work bench if you have a power supply. I don’t know offhand what S+ hoppers run on….24v?

The brake is not hung up, the hopper motor can turn freely with a brake disengaged. There's no coin jammed, and I've tested it.  With regular power from the machine , it all I get is a hum.

Have you clipped onto the motor power leads to verify you are getting voltage?
If so, then Im not sure what to say. It makes no sense that you can run it from power from the machine but it doesn’t run when commanded. Maybe a problem with the power supply or hopper driver?

Its possible the solinoid that pushes out the hopper is not working.
Try wedging a wad of paper to keep the brake in a relased state (just as a test).

I must not have described the situation well enough.
In the machine and on the bench , when I applied regular power , the motor energizes , the brake releases the motor hums , but does not rotate.

There are two parts to the motor, the stator and the rotor, when the brake is released the rotor will spin , the end in the gear box will turn the gears and eventually will turn the pinwheel. When you release the brake and turn by hand, does the rotor spin? Your best bet is to disassemble the rotor from the stator, lubricate the small gear opening and put the rotor back in and spin it by hand trying to work that pivot point free.
Only have to remove two screws that hold it together, take a picture before you disassemble, brake, spring, pivot arm, etc.
From what you describe, I think this will fix the problem.

Hope this helps
Jim

I got it working by tearing it all apart and lubricating it. The gear box had a lot of drag in it. But once I greased and exercised it, everything started moving better and the motor is now able to spin correctly.

When I first started working with S+'s, I saw my co-worker take a hopper transmission apart.
That can be very messy! lol
Luckily I've never had to take one apart.
