How do I release these plastic darts from heatsink

How does this spring loaded darts release? I'm trying to remove heatsink and replace the thermal paste.  Keep getting no signal after a short time.

I remember gently grabbing and working the pins with a pair of pliers upwards, using the heatsink fins as leverage.
Once the pins are up about a 1/4", you can use your fingernails to push out the pin from the holes underneath the board.
Below is what the two pins look like removed.
The thermal paste was hardened for sure...lol
