Need help with bonus board on universal mustang slot

Hello, i am.new to this forum having only just found it. I purchased a universal mustang slot machine. I am not new to electronic repair but have never dealt with a slot machines before. There was work previously done to machine which i am working through. I need a wiring diagram schematic for the top bonus section to help . Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The mustang is a bonus machine. You have a bottom cpu and a top cpu, machine will only work when both are working and communicating with each other.

There are two reset procedures , one for the bottom and one for the top, both involve holding down a button and applying power, you have to do the bottom first and the top second.

Both have batteries , which have to be good.

The only thing that I have seen fail was the plus 5 volt supply used to power the top cpu, it is that connector you showed on the picture, that soldering job do not look good on the one lead, actually looked like a cold solder joint.

There is information in the universal section explaining a lot of this.

I used to have schematics for the top bonus section, believe I sent them to Pitts as keeper of the universal stuff.  Don’t know if Uniman checks in from time to time?

Yes, that is what started me on this journey,Error code 62. Which in turn led me to the top section because there is no power to top at all. Someone else worked on this machine before i got it and said the old battery leaked and messed up original 5v supply board. So he replaced it with a different 5v supply picture supplied. Wires were cut and moved around for new supply so i am stuck with a mess to figure out lol.

Well I've looked through all the documentation I have as well as what's on the NLG website and I'm not finding any information specific to the Mustang Bonus board.

Previous posts stated issues with the batteries and power supplies. I'm assuming the main MPU board is booting up and the game plays okay otherwise. If the bonus board has power and a power up reset was done does the display show any signs of life? Is the comm cable plugged into the correct data port? Also check the comm cable plug on the main MPU sub board.

You mentioned battery acid damage, was the damage severe enough to open any traces? It's going to be difficult to verify the circuits without a schematic but it can be done.

I'll continue to look for a schematic specific to the Bonus Board.

1-Okay, I'm going to slow down and talk step by step. I know 5v is supplied up top, but is that the only power up.top? or is there another voltage supplied? A wiring diagram would be so helpful lol. I hate not being able to find info.

I found the manual for the Mustang bonus board which includes the schematics (Thanks Jim!). I need to scan them into files and then post in the downloads section. I'll let you know when there ready.

The Bonus board uses 5vdc, the input is a three pin plug CN-5. PIN-1 is the ground and PIN-3 5vdc.

The battery is backup voltage for the two 54k RAM IC's 3 & 4. The battery should be a rechargeable type as the board has a charge circuit. The charge circuit may have been disabled by clipping resistor R9. With the power off both IC's 3 & 4 should have battery voltage to PIN 28.

The Bonus LED display board also uses 5vdc and there's 24vdc connected but it appears to be a a passthrough.

CN-1 is the comm to the main MPU.
CN-4 goes to the LED display.
CN 2 & 3 are comm ports for external PC's.

And put a sticker over the crystal on that eprom. Especially if you are going to be aiming bright light from a magnifier to look closely at the board. Those eproms are erased by exposing them to UV.

Thank you so very much. This is awesome! I did not know about the crystal being exposed to uv will erase it. Hopefully that hasn't happened yet. I will take the knowledge given so far and continue my diagnostics. Soon i hope to get this lovely ole gal.back up and running!

Admin note: He hadn't logged on, in a long time. Used to always respond to my "hellos" but now he hasn't responded to my PM's or E mails. He did long on back in June though. I'm worried that he's not ok.
Found him! I think he's just been retired a little.

Eprom is likely ok as long as it wasn’t in the direct sunlight. It takes 15-20 minutes in a U.V box to completely erase one. Its just good practice to cover the lens any time you see one exposed.

Thank you for the welcome. I will do my best to help where i can. First step is to get my own machine running lol.

I actually have machines that I purchased several years ago and I couldn’t get them working but I knew my skills and ability to troubleshoot electronics would improve as I worked on more machines. It might take some time but you will eventually figure it out. You will learn a lot about how slot machines work.
They are different than other electronics because they have security protocols in place to prevent theft, tampering, over paying and other types of criminal activity you can only imagine! Plus, they have watchdog circuits that hold the board in shutdown if other logic rules are not met.

Step one is obviously to verify that the power supply is providing a steady source for the motherboard. Next is to evaluate what rules the circuit board is looking for in order to boot.
Do you have any mini-grabbers to clip onto IC’s? We might be able to determine if the CPU is running properly or if its in shutdown. Surprisingly AI has been very helpful in helping me probe around and determine what is holding the board back.

BTW I don’t believe you have said exactly what the board is or isn’t doing.

Thank you for the advice. I managed to take a dead machine get it working with only 2 codes left are a error 50 door code and the big error 62 dealing the bonus board section. Someone worked on the machine before i got it and messed it up wiring wise which is what led me here trying to find wiring diagrams or schematics for upper bonus section to figure this out lol.

I managed to get top board powered on with led 1 lit up and led's 2,3,4 not lit. Not getting anything on led panel in front or led bar at top. Still patiently waiting on wiring diagrams or schematics to further track down these issue. Reading +5.24v on  output lines from power adapter.

I don't know squat about the Mustang. JIM was always the expert on this machine.

I pretty much laid out what to do, you have to clear the bottom cpu first, then clear the top cpu.

The bottom cpu has a hole down near the bottom of the cover, inside that hole is a button switch, with the power off push and hold in that button switch then turn on power , wait about 6 seconds, then release.

The top cpu board has two button switches mounted in the corner, again, turn off the power, hold those button switches down, apply power, hold for about 7 seconds, Release, if everything is hooked up the led display should come on,
Machine is now ready to play.

Please try this and see if the machine will work!

Jim, thank you for the reset procedure. I appreciate the information and will try once i get the wiring fixed to the point where it powers up reliably. The original owner tried repairing the machine himself and messed up wiring and blew 2 fuses.
