Fortune 1 Joker poker wild issues
« on: September 10, 2026, 05:48:19 am »
So this machine was basically gifted to me and I'm trying to see if i can get it running.  When I power it on I will occasionally get the bllllleeeooop start up sound (but not every time), and the screen comes up blue. I have replaced the battery (might need a higher voltage as the one I put in is a 3.6 but I think it takes a 4.4?). Cleaned the connections on where the top board connects,  reseated the eproms (only the 2 smaller ones), reseated all the connections. At times when I power on the hopper will activate. On the left side of the hopper bay there is a set of 4 leds, the bottom one lights up when the door is open and goes off when it's shut. I briefly looked thru the manual, but didn't see much help right of the bat. I'm learning that I need to stick with a few brands and not try to fix everything  :banghead: but i digress. So any idea on what to do next,  preferably in layman's terms? I know when we're talking boards it's a much deeper topic than em machines. These are all the pics I have at the moment.

Those do not need the battery. It only retains information on current game play in case of a power failure. Not necessary to troubleshoot and definitely not the reason for failed boot.

Have you tested to see if it plays blind? They are known for problems in the video circuit.

When I have one of those that doesn’t work I send it to K -Lar. They have a test station and Alan will make sure everything is running.

Other than that, every IC in a socket probably needs to be lifted , cleaned and re-seated. Be sure to take a picture of the board before you start.

I tired to rub it blind but wasn't getting anything.  I'll check the chips again to see if i missed anything. I'll keep you posted.

Have you checked the basics? Like does the 5v power supply work? Is power getting to the board?

Yes, the battery is only needed if your game has credits play. If your button panel does not have bet max or bet one buttons you do not need a battery.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Didn't get a chance to get that deep into it yet.  Need to find all the schematics so I'm checking the right spots.

i don't think it's a credit machine, I'll check on it.  Thank you!

Doesn’t matter, even if it is a credit machine they don’t need a battery to play. They were required to have a battery in a casino environment in case power failed in the middle of hopper payout. That is not necessary for home use.

Also you mentioned it made some noises on start up. Mine does not,  and my understanding is they don't. Mine just turns on and is ready to go. I have a sound board, and you do too. (It's underneath the CRT shelf)
It just makes goofy sounds on each coin entry. I'm wondering if it's was in the middle of a payout?

It may just be the lighting. But it looks like you have some nasty a** corrosion on those e-proms.  If it's corrosion, I am sure the sockets are not making good contact with the traces or, the traces are damaged too.

I noticed that as well.  It's almost like it was a old sticker or tape. It didn't appear to be on the legs of the eprom but like a old sticker or tape... but I'll take a good look at it when I get back to it.

So here's a quick update.  Took out all the removable chips on the main board and reseated them also removed the battery.   Results varied with each power cycle. Sometimes I would get a alarm others not,  sometimes the screen would not turn on,  others I would get snow, or different garbled displays, but it would change each time I cycle the power. Might take one more Crack at it, but odds are is going on the back burner for a bit until I get a few more of these machines fixed up and moved out.  I'll still take suggestions until then.

Honestly, I never had any luck with those boards. I send them to K-Lar. So far Alan has been able to get them working. One only needed the video pots and a capacitor fixed. I think I had one that had a bad diode. Did you check the power on the board? Clean 5v?

No I have not checked the 5v line.  I'm not sure where it is on there.. really haven't been able to dig in too deep. Just check the schematic for the right pin?

For the most part every IC on the board uses 5v as its primary power source. I could be wrong but I believe the Fortune series will boot if the 5v line is the only line working. In other words, I don’t think it requires the 12v or other peripheral power rails to boot, you just wouldn’t be able to load a coin, sound wouldn’t work, no button lights, etc.

I just find an IC that is convenient to clip on to (or probe). Every IC will have a ground (0v) and +5v. You should get a very steady 5v supply. But be careful, you don’t want to short a 5v pin to another pin and burn out a logic chip.

The power systems on these boards are pretty bullet proof, but a 5v regulator could burn out after 40 years. It is the most vital resource for the game to run so you need to know if the board has power. Its like blood.

The first picture I have an arrow pointing to a ground clip. Conveniently located at the front of the board. I wish everyone would do that.

The second picture shows the heat sink with the 12v and 5v voltage regulators. They are labeled 7812 and 7805.
When looking at the IC right side up, the pin on the right is the output. If you have some mini grabbers with a wire you can clip right onto those. Honestly, it would be a blessing and a very easy fix if you found out it was something as simple as the 5v regulator burnt out!

In general , here is what they do. There's a big transformer in the game that converts the power from your wall outlet into lower voltage AC (sometimes 27v, 24v, etc)…but its still AC.  In this case, I think they send something like 27v to the board and send that through yet another transformer thats mounted on the board to split it into something like 7v and 14v. Then it goes to the regulators on that heat sink which provide a very stable 5v output for the computer to run on. Those regulators need some overhead, hence the 7v and 14v coming from the transformer. Your 5v rail needs to be very stable and somewhere between 4.85v and 5.15v. A little more is fine but if it goes too low those older eproms and CPU don’t like it.

My synopsis of how they handle power is subject to error because I get the Fortune series and PE series mixed up. But if you look at the schematic you can pretty easily see the flow. You really only need to know this if your 5v rail isn’t working.
