Mills 1930 War Eagle 25 cent - operational problem

I am at wits end.  I took machine apart to clean, oil and grease.  It went together but now as shown in the two photos the "disc stop lever release" (photo 0294) does not fall behind the "disc stop lever extension" (photo 0292).  Machine operates but the disc stop lever release jams on top of the disc stop lever extension rather than going behind it.  I have made some mistake in reassembly but don't know what.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Need more pics  ... looks like the dog is set way too far forward. Please show us more angles or the back of the mech. We can help you then.

Thanks for the reply.  Attached are more photos.  The operating arm dog is pretty much hidden behind other parts of the right side but I did try to get a picture.  The dog is in a position to the back of the machine.  The operating fork dog is also shown. 


When I took the machine apart, I did not take the dog assembly or any of the right side apart just to insure that those parts would not get errored.


If need be I will take it apart to show more.

Hello,
   You need a new clock spring and looks like mechanism needs a good greasing. E-bay has great books & manuals on what to grease and has good clock replacement springs available. I would go with the 15 dollar spring .
Your timing lever in the back attached to the clock needs grease on the top and the roller as well.

Look at your First photo :  See the First spring on a lever toward the top. Push that lever in.

Thanks for the advice.  When I push in the lever with spring on left of back strap it just stops payout, does not alter anything else.  Perhaps you meant another lever but I could not find such.  I will check eBay for springs.


I have greased and oiled all pivot points and clock mechanism.  The vestiges of white you see are bits of the lithium grease I used.


The two photos show the jam problem as first mentioned in original post.  I can only get it behind the disc stop lever extension manually.  From beginning to end the disc stop lever rubs against the reels.  I just don't understand what takes it away from the reels but the disc stop lever extension.  It almost seems that something is out of synch.

Below the lever you pushed in, that stopped your payout. Go directly below that, do you see a square screw sticking up about 1/4 inch and below that it holds a piece of metal that can come out or be pushed in after the screw is loose. pull the rod type arrow out just a little and see how action works and then a little more until everything winds up the complete slot action properly. Just a small movement at a time about 1/32 of a inch will do it. if that does not work then move the rod in until it works properly. Then tighten the nut firmly, snug it just a bit with fingers, so it wont move as you test your machine.

I moved that shaft as suggested in your last post.  Bringing it out toward camera extended the distance away from catching the lever.  By small increments moved it in toward dog but at no position did it result in the lever being caught.  In the end I moved it in to where it jammed the dog.  Attached is photo of the shaft.  Any other ideas?  We have been thinking of putting a small bend at the bottom of the lever but hate to do that if it does not work.

I am lost a bit after the photo's.  First do you have the Reel Bundle in the machine and do you when you adjusted the bar lever after your adjustment then cycle the machine?. So the reels spin ect?.

Reel bundle is in machine.  I made all tests with reel bundle in place.  Reels spin freely as long as the 4th click lever is not against them.  When I cleaned the machine, reel bundle was kept intact and not broken down.  With each test I try the the mechanism with screwdriver leverage.  Everything works but for the 4th click lever not being grabbed by the extension on the main operating fork.

I know this is an old post, but it does not show as resolved - I think that the problem is the horizontal flat piece (kinda new-don't know all the names-sorry) the piece that would have the reel brake wires on - on the left side where there is a screw to attach/hold it in place - I think it should be on the Back side of the bracket. You can faintly see it is darker in that area and the book I have shows a picture of this type of mech -stated as an earlier style- and the picture show this piece to be on the back side.
