IGT 5 times pay no power to motherboard??
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:00:18 pm »

Hi guys,

I have a 5 times pay machine that gets power to the fluorescent lights only.  I have no power to reels (spin freely), digital display (nothing at all), or buttons (nothing works or lights up).  Some things I have checked are:

1.  swapped power supply harness with good machine and harnesses are okay
2.  fuses in this machine are all good
3.  3.6v battery reads 3.63 volts and has good solder points
4.  swapped motherboard into good machine (get power to reels, and digital display, but game doesn't function properly (no sound, threw error code 65-2 initially)

I noticed there is a chip between the power supply and the motherboard connections and am wondering if this could be the culprit.  Thanks in advance for everyones time and effort!

Have you tried swapping the power supply itself, or just the wiring harness?

No, just the harness itself.  Is there a way to check the supply with a multimeter rather than swapping, or is it easy enough to pull out and swap?

check it with a meter, the voltages are AC,  pin 1=green 7/8vac common, 2= green 7/8 vac common, 3= blue 7 vac hot, 4= brown/blue strip 8 vac hot, 5= orange/green strip 24vac hot, 6= orange 24vac common.     fuse caps can cause a problem.  check fuses with meter, don't trust visual!

Hope this helps

Im a bit vague on AC power.  with the meter set to AC, can I insert the black lead into one of the green commons and then go around to each wire with the red to measure voltage?  Or is there another way this should be done?

AC  no polarity concerns      red to green wire,  black to  7 &8 vac hot wires,  then red to 5 and black to 6  should read 24vac,

i get about 8v on the green wires and 27v with red on 5 and black on 6.  fuses are good, checked continuity on those.

There is a large connector in the middle of the motherboard that feeds the power.
Lets be clear - we are talking the small board with the edge connector that the MPU (removeable CPU board plugs into).

If that is loose the power behaves as you have described. One of the pins is typically scorched due to a poor connection. Take one of those white erasers or some sand paper and run it across the pins to shine them up. The issue has always been at the mother board end - I have never followed the wires to the main power supply.

I ran into a situation like that where there was good AC voltages on the female side of the connector but when the motherboard (also called backplane board) was removed and the male side of the power connector was examined closely it was discovered that when the tin plating on two of the pins were rubbed with a eraser the tin plating would slip right off exposing a burnt copper pin below it.

This caused poor electrical conduction and the AC voltages were not reaching the rest of the board.

Replacing the male 6 pin header fixed the problem.

This usually indicates a IR condition where the poor pin conduction caused heat that contaminated the female pin also so slipping each female pin out of it's holder and spreading the pin out and cleaning it with a pink eraser helped lower the resistance between the  female to male connection and prevented the mating from heating up.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

those voltages seem to be correct,  three voltages, pin 1 to pin 3= 7/8 vac,  pin1 to pin4=7/8vac,  pin5 to pin 6 24 vac.   since you swapped the harness and there was no change, ( the white flat 6 pin connector usually is the problem, it typically would show signs of brown discoloration on the pin that is in suspect, the tension is lost on the metal , usually you can clean and reshape the contact and it will work for years)   since you swapped the motherboard and there was no change,  WHAT IS THIS CHIP YOU REFEREED TO ?    pictures would help.   the next likely suspect would be the board, since all the power supplies are on that board, they provide the +5vdc for all the logic and +VB(8vdc) for display voltage, and reference for reels being stiff.

Thanks for the clarification Jim.  My voltages are actually different than what you mentioned:
pin 1 to 3 = ~0v
pin 1 to 4 = 1.4v
pin 5 to 6 = 27.5v

Also, I made the rookie mistake of calling the processor board the mother board.  So, to correct myself, I had switched the processor boards (not the mother boards) in the first post.  Working on getting a pic. keeps saying file size to large.

Regards, Corey

You might look at the actual mother board. The one on the bottom that the mpu plugs into. Look at the front for a connector with a burn mark on it. Here's a link to a picture of it.

There is a slight burn mark on it, however, I swapped harnesses with a good machine, harness is good but still no power to the machine. thanks tho.

I went ahead and swapped power supplies with good machine.  Both supplies work fine.  Still getting same results and voltage readings on bad machine.  Thinking the mother board might be the culprit.  Going to try and swap these now.  If anyone has any tips on what to look for that would be great.

Regards, Corey.

So I went the brute force way and swapped out the mother boards.  This gave me power to the reels and digital display which read 65-3.  I turned the jackpot key (gave 65-2), then hit the reset button back to error 61.  Gonna try and read up on that one and see where I get.

Ok, error 61 and insert coin/0 credits is flashing.  Seems like the infamous 61 loop.  Aslo determined that mother board is bad after swapping.  So, ill be ordering a mother board, set and clear chip before I can do anything more.  Any suggestions on reputable sources for these parts?

Corey,   if you get a minute,  recheck your 7 and 8 vac in this manner,   use the green wire (pin 2)  as the common for the 7 and 8 vac.  pin2 to pin 4 should be 8vac, pin 2 to pin 3 should be 7 vac.

I get 8 and 9v respectively.  Of course this is with a working motherboard put in.
