thought i was prepared, looked at lots of old posts, and got totally lost. CPU serial ends in 504b1. bill acceptor door switch already bypassed. please be patient, i might not have the exact error message terminology correct.

had a door open m error. pulled board, removed dead varta bat( no acid damage), and replaced a coin bat at ( was at 2.5 volts) with a 3.6 lithium, no added diode. (didnt have a coin bat handy). . replace board, and get a message, close main door. i closed the door, no change. worked the slide up and down a few times, still no good. next i tried a key and clear, still no good. maybe i shouldnt have done that

swapped the ram to clear credits, and i used chips 45 and 224. got the correct amber leds, etc.
i expected in to go to menu 7 but it didnt, got a ram error and tilt sound. turned key 4 times, and it just says close door.

pull board, jumpered the two positive terminals where the battery were, and installed a 3.6 volt satt battery i had on hand, with a blocking diode. bat voltage is 3.25 with the diode. at this point, the board boots, reels spin, self tests, nexplex, and then it goes to game mismatch. i think i should have jumpered from the bat neg to bat pos, and that what the satt bat did. i went into the menus by pressing the test button , went to 7.1. got lost , went here and there and ended up with 1 credit worth 2500.00 !. cant get rid of the game mismatch, couldnt figure out how to set the denomination and its not working. i have the board out, so if you guys are sure the varta bat replacement isnt needed, i'll jumper from pos to neg and be done with that. i didnt realize jumpering meant from pos to neg, i assumed it meant between where the 2 pos lugs on the battery were, the battery being the jumper. does make sense now though, the battery acting as a capacitor, but i didnt think you could jumper pos to neg directly. i guess you can

i might be so far off track that i have to clear and key again, then start fresh? i have since downloaded some more complete info on all the settings, which may be helpful, but also too much info that will just confuse me

. if there is a step by step that can get me thru , id appreciate it. i took pics of the board and chips.

For starters, remove that battery you put in place of the Varta, it's not needed on the 500 series boards (plus that just looks dangerous).

it was just for a test, and it did its purpose. it seems it would still need a jumper? didnt work without one. and i'm still in the weeds

You're overcomplicating it. No jumpers needed after green battery removal and when you get the second ram error message that is normal, easily reset with the jackpot reset key. After a clear it is normal to get both the crc mismatch error followex by the ram error. Both are reset with the key and pressing and holding the test switch for 3 seconds. If you get the door open M error message make sure the door latch is fully seated

wouldnt work at all without the new battery acting as a jumper. i suspect without a battery it will still need a jumper. i reset the ram error turning the jackpot key 4 times, but will the jackpot key also clear the game mismatch error? didnt for me. also, dont i still need to set denominations, payouts , etc? i tried the simple way first, and it didnt work.

Putting a jumper from positive to negative on the battery pads places a direct short to ground on the battery charging circuit. It'll damage something no doubt, probably the regulator. That likely won't matter since you're not using it anyhow with the battery removed, but why chance it?

that was my thought, but another post has a clear photo of a jumper from pos to neg on the battery . what to do??

SG362s remove the battery leave the jumper positive to positive .
I remember old post from Buzz about 362s and varta removal.
Do not jump positive to negative.

Board sure looks ugly where varta was hope you did not ruin traces in that area as they will give you the door MB errors.

I had posted on the old site years ago that I had 2 - 500 series boards don't know if they were 502 or 504s, but they would not work with the green varta battery removed. So I placed a jumper across the 2 POSITIVE terminal's and both boards worked fine. Worth a try.

Pretty sure it has to do with which SG chips are used I know for sure some of the 100 series SGs need the jumper. I also thought 362s needs the jumper also. (Stuff from the old site)

Best solution on the SG chips is to replace them with 363's, the 362's were a problematic chip for home users

i think its solved. i had two different boards, both with the 363 chips, no varta batteries and no battery jumpers. both boards, when i tried to set them up, had the coin denomination at 2500.00. when i would go to change it , the service and cash out buttons would not light up and work, no way to change it. swapped the ram chips, did a clear and key, go thru the steps, still 2500.00. cant change it. then i tried this: swapped the ram positions again, did a clear. instead of using the key chip, i went right into key config by pressing the test button. at that point the coin denom came up at zero, the buttons lit and i was able to set it at 25 cents, and now it works. is that normal ? should i have never used the key chip after the clear chip? i was going by the instructions i found on this site.
now i'm not sure what to do the next time. any thoughts?

It sounds to me that you must not be doing the steps exactly correct or your clear or key chip is not good. You should never have to remove the RAM chips to program the MPU.
did you follow this procedure exactly?

that's the procedure i followed , and i would get the 2500.00 coin. i swapped the ram chips before the clear to ensure there were no credits . i thought you had to use the key chip after a clear, but the last time i didnt use the key chip after the clear, and it worked. i went to key config by pressing the mpu button . the clear chip is a 224, the key a 45.

The 224 I use for the enhanced boards and 97 for the 502 and 504 boards. The 224 may not be working for your board.

224 works on both. After the clear did you get all the way to machine mismatch?
You have to go through turn key call attendant sequence 2 or three times until the ram and eerams clear.

funny, but it didnt get to mismatch. i set up the board in another game, and it did go to mismatch, and on from there. in the game i was working on, it didnt get to mismatch, thats what made me try to set it up without the key chip. it did do the ram errror, turn the key 4 times, press the button,ect.

It should have done that two more times (error/ key turn).
Wait did you say you cleared it in another machine then tried to set it up in a different one?? The chips on the mpu must talk to the chips on the mother board of the same game you are setting up through the entire process. You are not just clearing the MPU you are also clearing the mother board(back plane).
