Putting a 660 3.0me (new style) box in a smld cabinet
« on: October 17, 2024, 09:16:59 am »
it is model 500660000W.

I see it has different power connections.

Can it done?

Is it worth the effort to use as a test box or even replace my 625?

What is needed?

The only difference should be the video cable that goes to the main door monitor.

I'm just wondering RB... wouldn't the 660 have different power connectors than the 625, as mentioned by sscarlso in this post?

3.0M has an externally mounted ATX power supply. 625 and 660 have internally monuted ones. You asked about replacing your 625. The only difference there is on board video vs an aux video card.

How do I connect the 660 3.0ME box to my smld with the 625 3.0 box and larger connector?

Dude, neither of those boxes are a 625. One is a 3.0M and the other is a 660 minus the video card.
You need the harness pictured to convert to the internal ATX of a 625 or 660.

Thanks for clarifying, I was told the one was a 625 and with the e4690 video and the 4gb of ram that makes it work like a 660.  The genuine 660 is untested by me, told it works.

What is the part number of that cable? or a source for it?

What model machine is that cable in?

If you want to save yourself a LOT of time and effort.

Open the 660 box you have and remove the PCIE video card.  It's no different than removing a PCIE card from a desktop PC.  Then remove your existing brainbox, pop the cover and plug it in.    :cool_thumb_up:

If the 660 has 4GB of RAM and your existing box only has 2GB, swap the RAM from the 660 as well.  And while you're at it, change all the batteries unless you're sure they're fresh.   Two CR2450s in the PCI card, and a CR2032 in the motherboard.  Will save you a lot of time if the batteries aren't known to be fairly new.

Put your brainbox back in as you have the matching power connectors and voila.   Exactly the same as a 660.

But you don't connect your displays to where you used to.   You connect both your displays to the dual DVI card now.  Onboard video will be disabled when the PCIE card is present.  So you'll need a DVI male to VGA female adapter to connect the existing VGA cable for your lower screen to as the lower screen must be connected using a DVI > VGA adapter > your current lower display cable or things won't work right.  Connect your top display with a DVI > DVI cable which it should have there already.

If you have the parts on hand, about a 30 min job and you're good to go.   You can get the batteries and adapter from Amazon.

Thanks, but I am all set with the box in the machine, I want to use the 50066000w box for setting up different games and/or fam 20 down the road. Both boxes have 4gb of ram, solid state drives. The old box has e4690 card, the 50066000w had one but the seller kept it.

The harness in the spin link would work but it shows out of stock.

I found a company that will make it for a special one off price discount. Waiting for the invoice.

Received my cable power today (Brand new). swapped my e4690 video card, ran the wires, put the 660 brainbox in and I don't get any video (no sync), put in the ekey 7 and diagnostic key (14-21)  and no light on the ekey, diagnostic key has a solid light.

Dead box? Operator error? power cable is wired wrong?

Any and all help is appreciated.

If your old brainbox had the one big connector on the front, and the USB PSU on top which also connected to the backplane (it's internal on a 660 box).

Then as far as I know, on a G23 v1 with a 660 both the smaller power connectors on the front are connected to the backplane.  The dual row one on the left and the single row one on the right.  If you have a v2, where the mainboard has a yellow handle, then only the two row connector on the left side is connected.   I have both a v1 and v2 with 660 boxes.  And on the v1 both are connected, on the v2, only the two row connector on the left side is connected.    The dual row connector on the brainbox is the main power, and the single row connector on the right powers USB.

But on machines with a v2 board, they apparently have slightly different wiring and USB power comes from a smaller PSU in the cabinet.

If anything on the brainbox lights up or anything, you're getting "some" power.  But if it isn't booting, something else isn't connected for power that needs to be.

On my v1, I did a conversion just like you're doing from a 625 with the big plug like your old one & smaller PSU on top of the box that went to the backplane.  And the cable I got for it connected both the front power plugs on the 660 to the backplane.  The dual row plug to the main power, and the other connected to a smaller plug higher up on the backplane where the top power supply from the 625 box went to previously.  Which I believe was even labeled on the backplane as USB PWR.  My v2 with the yellow handle only has the dual row power plug connected for it to function.

But, even if USB power wasn't connected.  Should still boot.  You would just get touchscreen errors, and errors from any other component connected with USB as they wouldn't have power to function.

Do either of the fans spin on the brainbox?  Either the CPU fan, the case fan, or both when you power on?  Any beep or series of beeps from the brainbox?   I'm "assuming" your 660 brainbox has good bios chips in it.  If you buy a 660 brainbox, they often have the socketed bios chip on the motherboard removed.  If there isn't one there, it of course will never boot unless the bios chip is there.  :)

But you can remove that socketed bios chip from your 625 and put it in the 660 if it's missing and you have a chip puller.

On the back plain, I plugged in the new cable to j15 and j129, they are not labeled Power or USB pwr...J115 was going to the old external power supply.

I get light in the brain box on the PCI card, the CPU fan only runs for a second.

As a computer repair guy, I am thinking the bios chips my be bad as it doesn't POST...no beeps either.

They are interchangable.  So if your old box was good and have a chip puller (cheap tool everyone should have), you can pull it from the old and put it in the new box.

The bios chip for the PCI card isn't likely a problem.  It would still post even if that chip had an issue. But if that's suspect, you can just put the PCI card from your old box into the new one if you haven't done this already.

Swapped the bios chip on the main board and swapped the PCI card, same symptoms. I notice the bios socket on the Main board is cracked.

No go then.  PLCC sockets don't make contact to all pins if they're cracked and it won't boot...  Superglue won't hold it together.  Only hacky way would be "maybe" if you had a small ziptie you could wrap around the socket so it holds together to contact all pins when a chip is pressed in the socket.

Otherwise, the board itself is toast.  Resoldering a PLCC socket is far too difficult.  But keep the bios chip and the PCI card/it's bios chip somewhere safe.

Put the video card in your old box and you'll have good performance.

And if you REALLY want a backup 660 Brainbox, get one from GET-T for $150 and it won't be messed up. It will be tested & complete, but no bios chip.  Says 2GB is in them, but ones I've bought all had 4GB.  And it will have an SSD in it already too.

https://get-t.net/product/cpu168/

Put the bios chips into it, and you'll have a working 660 box.  And for that $150 you'll also have a second PCIE video card.

Few sell the PCIE video card by themselves for under $300.   Why when you can get an entire Brainbox with that PCIE card included for $150?

I have no idea...

But that's the way to go.
