Replacing the motor did the trick. It is running up to speed.

If you look at the locks, the hole in the wood is larger from the previous locks. I sourced a trim that would cover up the issue.

a failed motor is unusual.  If changing the motor fixed it, Is it one of these?:

- gunk between the rotor and the stator slowing down the rotor spin (remove the stator and clean the rotor drum and inside the stator hole)

- someone put a newer "snow hopper" motor on there and the brake was gunked up

- the gearbox grease has hardened ... you can see inside a little if you take off the stator if you can remove the inner bearing and rotor (I forget), otherwise ya gotta drill out the rivets in the gearbox to open it.

- gears failing, but in that case the gearbox is pretty noisy.  I've never seen a bad motor, but it's possible if the pinwheel and casting is cruddy and adding a lot of resistance to spinning.

Shocking, just shocking.

I took the hopper completely apart, the pinwheel was stuck, the gears were hard grease, one gear was wanky, afterwards I could spin it by hand. I restored the motor assembly, cleaned, serviced, so I guess I screwed up the motor restoring it since it was running slowly, slowly, slowly, then nothing. Thankfully I have extra motors, parts, when I have a problem, I tested the motor and it's OK.  We live and learn every day.

Also: I rebuilt the capacitor, replaced the contact plate, replaced a couple of worn parts, cleaned the contacts, switches, coils, beau plug, etc.

This is the older model motor that the machine uses. It's without the stop assembly, and its a rugged little 💩.

how did you service the original motor?

one gotcha if replacing grease in the gearbox is putting in too much grease.   If you pack grease in between the gear faces, the shear resistance of the grease will bog down the motor.

ya want grease on the teeth and very little in between the gears (except what works its way in there by itself).  I usually just paint grease on the gear teeth and call it good.  The manufacturer typically squirted a blob of grease maybe 3/8" in diameter on a spot where it lands on all the outer gear teeth and let the motor distribute it around.

Yes I put too much grease into the gearbox, kinda like packing wheel hearings, will start over again and put it in as a spare.  :duh:

So now it's running like a bat out of hell. The hopper motor is excellent.

Nice looking machine from the Fremont.
There’s a possibility that my parents dropped a few coins in, back in the day.
