Reel Spin Error - SG-150B Treasure Wheel - Video, details, request for help!

Hi friends-

I am trying to get my first slot machine up and running, SG-150B Treasure Wheel.
I am experiencing a reel spin error on one reel.

The issue follows the 2nd/middle ribbon cable connector - if i swap reel cables, the issue follows the cable onto a different reel across all 3 reels.

I rung out all 30 pins on the ribbon cable, no issues there.

After the machine runs test and shows the error, all 3 reels remain stiff even the erroring one.

I just cleaned the board with IPA and a toothbrush. It looks great, can't see any issues.

Also- it says “1 Reel Spin Error” in the video - this changes to 2 and 3 based on which reel the middle cable is plugged into when a full RAM reset is performed. The error message reel # then stays the same until another RAM reset is performed, even if you swap the cables. The physical issue does move with the cable, however.

I am looking for any suggestions to try before I look around for a new motherboard.

Would anyone be able to tell me more about PCB 120008 which is located near the power supply?
I am not finding this in the schematic, and I do not see the 3 switches on this PCB listed in the manual.

Maybe this is the SIS board and not relevant?

SW1 is a momentary button labeled SELECT
SW2 is a 4 dip switch, labeled 1, 2, 3, and C
SW3 is a dial labeled VALUE

There is also a 7 segment display on this board which wonks out - seemingly in tune with the reel jerking which is why I am trying to make a connection here.

There is a non-rechargable battery on this board (Keeper 2 3.3V) which is dead.
(My main board has no battery, and dip2 SW7 is turned on to bypass the check, if that is relevant)

Hoping it may be a power issue based on how the 7 segment display is behaving ??

That is just the communications board used for Casinos and really does not do anything for a stand alone machine.  As far as the long drain cap, it is also not necessary as long as you have the dipswitch for it off.
It has been awhile since I worked on one of these.  Make sure all your ribbons for the reels are in the correct spots.  Your reel driver chip could also be bad.  Hope this helps a little bit.  Does sound like there is a problem with the MPU board or eproms.

But he said the problem follows the ribbon. If I am reading that statement correctly then I would replace the ribbon, even if it tones out.

If the cable is good and the issue follows the cabling (there is one cable that splits up into 3- one smaller set for each reel) would indicate to me that there is an issue with the MPU board-most likely the driver for reel 2 is bad.  Sometimes I have seen the eproms get corrupted and cause issues.  Can't hurt to replace the cable and try (as cabling does sometimes fail).

Thanks guys, I will make a new ribbon cable, that is an easy first step.
I did just go ahead and buy a new-old-stock MPU as well, fingers crossed one of those does the trick.

Not saying its the right part, or that I know what i'm even looking at, but it appeared to be right so I snagged it.

I have a Rev B and this pic is of a Rev C. Otherwise, appears identical and is the SG88M-2 120002.

Figured this has the chance of fixing any broken solders, bad caps or other components, connectors, etc. as long as its not the EEPROM as that will have to be moved over from my existing board.

A SG-150 is different than the 88 format. They may be interchangeable with chips….not sure, but a SG-150 uses one ribbon that splits to 3.
If yours has all the same ribbon sockets and matches it sounds like you have an SG88 which is perfect. The price certainly is good if they work and are anywhere close to new.

Had some success with the new board, the MPU swap did fix the reel spin error.

I actually found a broken pin on one of the EEPROMs while swapping them to the new board - I am 90% sure that I didn’t break it myself, so that could have been the issue. Was able to solder on a new pin.

Next, ran into an issue where it said that the bill validator door was open despite jumping all of those switches and toning everything out all the way back to the MPU. After disassembling and reassembling everything for the 10th time that went away on its own, maybe just a bad connection.

So now, it seems to pass all of its boot up testing, it aligns the reels & cycles the bill validator, but then just locks up with a message “P. : BET 3    GOOD LUCK!”. Winner paid shows 0 but credits does not show anything. The bill validator lights are red not green. Opening the main door causes the stack light on the top to blink, but does not change the message on the screen. The RAM reset switch and the test button also do nothing in this state.

The dash-period-colon thing on the screen sort of makes me think the program is fried, except for the fact that it’s the same symbol as is shown in the 2nd post of this thread on someone else’s machine:

Do you know if this is normal operation, and I am just missing a boot up step?
It’s hard to tell if the machine is frozen or if it waiting for something.

The period just means "recently" or no games have been played yet since blah, blah, blah...
If you look in the manual, the manual will tell you exactly what the different periods mean.
Does your machine take a coin? Throw a coin in.
If not, open and close the door a couple of times to reset/recycle errors.

Note that the coin diverter I pointed to does alternate seemingly randomly between various states, between full-divert, full-retracted (so coin would go through counter) and floppy in between state.
Even when the coin diverter lets a coin pass through the black counter sensor, it does not add a credit to the machine.

Do you think its ready to accept credit and the sensor might be faulty?
The bill validator is lit up red and does not accept bills.

Edit: actually the coin in meter does advance when I pass a quarter through the black counter sensor

couple of things I notice.  You should have startup sound.  Your pull handle needs to be in the up position and you need a cash can.

I do get a start up chime, it’s just really quiet after putting the new board in.
There is supposed to be a volume control pot on the board but it’s not soldered on (to either of my boards)

The handle is stuck ‘down’ but it’s not pressing the switch yet.
I actually just got one spin out of it when I cycled the handle switch, now it’s stuck on “Machine Door Open” with the same “P Bet 3” above it.

Hey it is now working after another power cycle!!

It looks like the credits screen is not, and I have a “lamp com. Error” but I can put quarters in which are counted on the message screen and use the handle to spin.

try doing a Ram clear now.   The volume should be controlled by software menus if I remember right.  Its been awhile since I had one and worked on them.

Did the ram clear and everything looks good.
It does try to take bills now but I think the bills I have might be too new for the validator.

The ‘Credits’ screen is a little wonky, it doesn’t stay on all the time even when the machine has credits. It seems to be more of a software glitch than hardware based on how it’s behaving, but not sure.

I did get in the settings but don’t see one for volume. It’s hard to navigate settings as the cash out button, and bet1 buttons are not working and the spin button barely works, but those should be easy fixes.

I got into the treasure wheel bonus a few times and everything works there which is really cool.
The attract feature is working as well.

I am going to try to get a good video together of everything for other people’s interest & reference.
