Bulb tweaks in my F2
« on: July 05, 2026, 10:19:25 pm »
Ok aren't the F2 button bulbs 12v?
Mine say 474G but nothing shows up in a Google search - absolutely nothing. According to the internet, they don't exist.
Mine work fine, but I'd like to find out if there's any LED equivalent just so I can reduce some of the yellow hue out of the lenses.
I may perhaps have drank too much brandy, but this is is one of those things I keep wanting to get to!  :drinking_whiskey: :24:

That's funny.

Ok I need to just get out my meter and measure the socket voltage.
These look promising.  :thank_you:(I'm sober now :Tongue_Out:)

Ordered!
But I ordered the ones from USA, not Canada! :rotfl: They'll get here tomorrow.
And they are 6.3V or so. I don't know why I thought they were 12. AND they are #47 - I found a whole drawer full of them in my parts stock.
Not sure why they say 474G.  :Scratch-Head:

Ok here we go. This is interesting. I replaced the lights that illuminate the panel behind the illuminated buttons.
The button color you see at the bottom was exactly the same as the panel.
Now, with the new LED bulbs, I get a nice yellow rather than the icky orange.
I now need to carefully remove that back cover and zip tie the wire bundles which have migrated out and are causing a "wire shadow" on the left side.
Still I like this better.
Now I have to try changing out the bulb lights. I don't want to try removing the sockets. I have a feeling they're all brittle. I'm going to try popping off the lenses like I've done with other machines. I'm actually not sure what bulb type are in there. I'm assuming a wedge bulb.
I'm very happy though with the backlight color change!

Yes. They're still the same color as the background was (the icky orange) -  which is now a nice yellow thanks to the new LED bulbs.

Nice. Sounds like you figured out how to pop the caps off, thats how I would do them. However, I find a good cleaning usually brightens the incandescent bulbs up.

Well I popped off the lenses with my highly technical tools of a feeler gauge and my shrink-tubed needle tweezers. They didn't really look all that dirty but I cleaned the lenses and inserts... and got the same result. The bulb is a 6.3v #86. For fun, I tried a LED but it was 12v and just looked like a mini spotlight dead center of the button.  :hissyfit: I didn't bother taking a photo of that. Photo shown is with #86 bulb back in after cleaning.
I know bunker-Mark has discussed this before.
Does anyone know of a 6v led that has is more diffused?

Hey Mark, the pinball world is way advanced in regards to LED options. They have bulbs with many different options in how the mini LEDs are arranged and how the diffuser’s impact the lighting. The “front-on” lighting has always been challenging but maybe a bulb that has the LEDs arranged in a reflective manner would work better. Or something like a home made diffuser, take a round paper punch and punch out a piece of translucent white round plastic and glue to the end of the bulb?

Sort of like this with the cone being the diffuser and cat head being the bulb?  :Tongue_Out:

I'll have to poke around some of the pinball sites and see what's out there. Heck Gemini probably knows.
Thanks!

I know they have LEDs that spread the light wider.
I think one fella stuffed in a piece of steel wool to try to diffuse the light....I'm not joking!  :crylaughing:

The cone of shame! Nooooooooo!

What could possibly go wrong stuffing steel wool around a bulb?

I never told anyone this before. I was working on a circuit board that had a bank of tantalum capacitors, they kept shocking me when I worked on the bottom of the board. In my infinite wisdom I thought of a way to discharge them all at the same time by gently pressing a piece of steel wool onto them. Well, Im here to tell you that it worked! Remember those flash bulb cubes in the dark ages (50s,60s,70s)?

Yup, the ball of steel wool caught on fire….instantly! Not my finest moment!
